Chapter 10 - The Hospital Corridor

The sterile white lights of St. Jude’s Medical Center buzzed overhead, casting a harsh, clinical glare over the polished linoleum floors. Julian strode down the emergency ward corridor with long, purposeful strides, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, keeping a steady hand on Maya’s elbow as she practically ran beside him. Her wedding dress was caked with dust along the hem, a bizarre and tragic sight in a hospital waiting room filled with stressed families and exhausted medical staff.
They reached the front nurse’s station, where a tired-looking receptionist was typing furiously into a dual-monitor computer terminal. Maya leaned heavily against the counter, gasping for breath as she clutched the edge of the laminate desk.
“I am Maya Lin,” she blurted out, her voice trembling frantically.
“I received an emergency call about my mother, Eleanor Lin. Which room is she in, and what is her current status?”
The receptionist looked up, scanning Maya’s frantic expression and her extravagant, ruined bridal gown with a brief flash of professional confusion before returning to her screen.
“Eleanor Lin was brought in twenty minutes ago suffering acute hypertensive crisis and mild cardiac arrest,” the receptionist recited smoothly from the chart.
“She was stabilized in trauma bay three, but she has been transferred to the intensive care unit on the fourth floor. Her chart is currently flagged for an administrative hold due to unresolved financial guarantees tied to a property foreclosure.”
Maya felt the floor drop out from beneath her feet again. She gripped the edge of the counter tighter, her knuckles turning bone-white.
“An administrative hold? She is having a cardiac event! You can’t withhold treatment over paperwork!”
“It is not medical treatment being withheld, Ms. Lin; it is specialized neurological monitoring equipment authorization,” the nurse replied calmly, lacking any warmth.
“Your corporate guarantor account was frozen by a civil injunction filed less than an hour ago by a holding company under the name Marcus Vance. Until that asset freeze is legally contested or cleared by a secondary guarantor, the hospital’s legal department cannot approve the secondary care tier.”
Maya stared at the receptionist in horror, the cruel genius of Marcus’s revenge finally locking into place. He hadn’t just ruined her wedding day; he had effectively weaponized the legal system to trap her mother’s life in administrative red tape.
Before Maya could open her mouth to argue, a firm hand gently pulled her back from the desk. Julian stepped forward, sliding his black leather wallet from his back pocket and opening it to reveal his senior partner badge alongside his personal high-limit platinum credit cards.
“I am Julian Hayes, senior partner at Hayes & Vance Legal Counsel,” Julian stated, his voice carrying the absolute, unyielding authority of a man who commanded courtrooms daily.
“I am placing my personal signature and corporate backing as an immediate collateral guarantee for Eleanor Lin’s medical care. If a single piece of equipment is delayed by bureaucratic negligence, my firm will sue this hospital into bankruptcy before the sun sets.”

The receptionist blinked, her eyes darting from Julian’s severe expression to the platinum cards, before frantically reaching for her phone to override the administrative hold.
