Chapter 9 - The Blast on Elm Street

The explosion shook the foundations of the house, sending a shockwave that rattled the remaining windowpanes and blew dust off the ceiling beams. The man holding Clara’s arm lost his grip in the sudden violence, stumbling backward as plaster rained down around them.
Clara didn't hesitate. She whipped around, scrambled over the shattered frame of the front window, and sprinted out onto the lawn.
Thick black smoke billowed into the night sky from the intersection of Elm Street just a block away. The matte-black pickup truck that had blocked her driveway was gone, likely drawn toward the blast, leaving the suburban street strangely vacant and eerie under the amber streetlamps.
"Leo! Toby!" Clara screamed into the chilling wind, sprinting down the sidewalk toward the park entrance where the stormwater drainage pipe emptied out.
Her lungs burned with every breath, the cold air scraping her throat raw. Sirens began to wail in the distance, a chaotic chorus of police cruisers and emergency vehicles converging on the neighborhood from multiple directions.
She reached the iron grate of the park drainage exit, panting heavily as she dropped to her knees in the wet grass. The heavy iron bars were twisted slightly outward, as if something had burst through them with immense force.
"Leo!" she cried out again, thrusting her hands into the dark opening.
A small, dirt-covered hand suddenly grasped her fingers from the shadows. Clara gasped, pulling outward with all her might, and dragged a coughing, trembling Toby out of the pipe, followed closely by Leo, who was dragging the battered leather suitcase behind him.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Clara asked frantically, pulling both boys into a desperate embrace.
May you like
Leo pushed himself up, his eyes wide with adrenaline and terror, staring past Clara toward the burning intersection. "We have to run, Clara. The men in the black trucks... they aren't the only ones looking for us."
