Chapter 6 - The Diverting Echo

The heavy footsteps in the living room grew louder, the measured cadence of military boots striking the hardwood with terrifying precision. Clara knelt in the absolute darkness of the cellar, her muscles coiled tight, listening as the boots approached the base of the stairs just above the cellar door.
"The basement hatch," a muffled voice called out overhead. "It’s bolted from the inside."
"Use the crowbar," the second voice commanded coldly.
Clara knew she had seconds. If she stayed silent, they would breach the cellar and find the open drainage tunnel instantly. Breaking away from the escape route Leo and Toby had just crawled into, Clara scrambled toward the far corner of the root cellar where an old wooden shelf held dozens of glass jars of preserved fruit from seasons past.
With a deliberate, forceful shove, Clara tipped the entire shelving unit forward.
The shelf crashed down onto the concrete floor with a deafening explosion of shattering glass and rolling mason jars, creating a chaotic clatter that echoed violently through the subfloor.
Above her, the men froze. "Movement in the lower sector!" the first voice shouted, abandoning the cellar door. "They're trying to break through the foundation wall!"
Heavy running footsteps pounded away from the cellar entrance toward the far side of the house. Clara held her breath, pressing herself flat against the damp earth behind a stack of old tires. The metal crowbar struck the cellar deadbolt with a brutal, metallic clang, the wood splintering around the lock as the door began to force inward.
A flashlight beam cut through the crack in the door, sweeping wildly across the cellar floor. Clara closed her eyes, praying the darkness would swallow her silhouette.

Then, from deep within the stormwater pipe behind her, Toby let out a muffled, terrified sniffle.
