Chapter 12 - The Cabin in the Woods

The ancient oak trees grew thicker as Clara and the boys pressed deeper into the municipal park, the canopy overhead blocking out the moonlight entirely. Branches whipped at Clara’s face, and the damp earth threatened to swallow her sneakers with every stride, but the adrenaline coursing through her veins kept her moving forward.
"Where are we going?" Toby whimpered, his small legs struggling to keep pace with Clara and Leo. "My shoes are full of mud, Aunt Clara."
"Almost there, buddy, just a little further," Clara panted, scanning the dense thicket for a landmark she hadn't seen in over a decade.
Her grandfather had built a small, off-grid hunting cabin near the center of the park reservation long before the surrounding suburbs were ever zoned. It had no electricity, no smart meters, and no digital footprint—making it the only safe place within a five-mile radius where thermal tracking units couldn't scan their presence.
Emerging from a dense wall of ferns, the weathered timber cabin came into view, its sloping roof covered in a thick layer of pine needles. Clara hurried up the wooden steps, fumbled with a loose brick near the porch pillar to retrieve the hidden brass key, and unlocked the heavy door.
They tumbled inside, slamming the door shut and sliding a heavy oak security bar across the frame just as a distant drone buzzed loudly over the tree canopy above.
Toby collapsed onto an old plaid sofa, instantly falling back into a deep, exhausted sleep. Leo dropped the battered leather suitcase onto the rustic wooden floorboards, breathing heavily as he leaned against the stone fireplace.
"We're safe here for tonight," Clara said, leaning against the kitchen counter to catch her breath. "No smart meters, no cell towers, no signals."

Leo stared down at the leather suitcase, his expression turning grave. "We're only safe until morning, Clara. Because the file inside isn't just a copy. It's on an automated timer."
