Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Silence

Clara stood frozen in the open doorway, her breath hitching in her chest as the harsh autumn wind whipped stray strands of her long brown hair across her face. The heavy oak door offered no protection against the chilling reality unfolding before her.
Leo, her ten-year-old nephew, stared up at her with a solemn, exhausted maturity that no child should ever possess. Beside him, six-year-old Toby clutched the strap of his tiny green backpack so tightly his knuckles had turned stark white. At their feet sat a battered leather suitcase, scuffed and heavy, holding lives Clara knew nothing about.
"Where is he, Leo?" Clara finally managed to whisper, her voice trembling violently as she dropped to her knees on the cold porch tiles. "Where is your father? What is happening right now?"
Leo shifted his weight, refusing to meet her terrified eyes. "Dad said you were the only one left who wouldn't call the police. He said we had to wait here until the red light stopped flashing on your phone."
Clara grabbed her phone from the pocket of her beige cardigan. The screen was black, completely dead, yet the casing felt burning hot to the touch.
"Leo, you need to tell me the truth right this second," Clara demanded, her tone rising in frantic desperation. "You can't just show up on my doorstep dropped off by a stranger in a dark SUV. What did your father do?"

"You don't want to know, Aunt Clara," Leo said coldly, his voice entirely devoid of childhood warmth. "If you open that suitcase before midnight, Dad said whoever is hunting us will find this house in under twenty minutes."
