Chapter 4 - The Headlights on the Wall

Two blinding beams of white light swept horizontally across the living room wall, painting frantic shadows of the furniture across the ceiling. Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as the heavy rumble of a diesel engine idled just outside her front window.

Leo lunged forward, grabbing Toby by the shoulders and hauling the sleeping six-year-old off the sofa before the boy could even blink awake. "Toby, wake up! We have to move right now!"

"Shh! Stay down!" Clara hissed, crawling frantically across the rug to pull the heavy velvet curtains shut. Her hands shook so badly she could barely grip the fabric. Peering through a tiny gap in the drapes, she saw a matte-black pickup truck parked directly behind her sedan, blocking the driveway. The driver's side door remained firmly closed, but the idling exhaust billowed thick white clouds into the crisp night air.

"Clara, the back door," Leo whispered urgently, hoisting Toby’s small green backpack over the boy's shoulders while keeping a tight grip on the heavy leather suitcase. "If they cut the power grid through the smart meter, they're clearing the perimeter block by block."

"I don't have a back exit, Leo! It's a closed patio!" Clara whispered back, panic threatening to overwhelm her logic. She scanned the room frantically, her eyes landing on the basement door tucked beneath the staircase. "The root cellar. Down the stairs, now."

They moved with desperate, agonizing stealth. Clara unlocked the wooden cellar door, the hinges groaning softly in protest. She pushed Leo and the terrified, weeping Toby down the steep concrete steps before slipping inside herself and pulling the deadbolt shut from the inside.

Pitch blackness enveloped them, smelling of damp earth and old cedar. Above their heads, the heavy thump of boots echoed across the hardwood floor of the living room, followed by the sound of breaking glass.
