Chapter 2 - The Weight of Steel

The heavy front door clicked shut, sealing out the damp evening air, but the silence inside Clara’s living room felt infinitely heavier. The battered suitcase rested squarely in the center of the hardwood floor like an unexploded bomb.

Clara knelt beside the luggage, her hands hovering inches from the rusted brass latches. Toby had curled up on the edge of the sofa, fast asleep from sheer exhaustion, his green jacket still zipped to his chin. Leo stood by the window, peering cautiously through the cracked blinds into the dark suburban street.

"Leo, come sit down," Clara urged softly, trying to steady the frantic rhythm of her own heart. "We cannot keep living like ghosts. If your father is in trouble with the law, we have to call someone. We can protect you, but I need to understand what is inside this bag."

Leo turned slowly, his young face illuminated by the amber streetlamp bleeding through the window. "You think this is about the law, Clara? Dad wasn't running from cops. Cops are easy to hide from. The men who took our house didn't wear badges."

"Who took your house, Leo?" Clara asked, her throat tightening.

"The people who built the company Dad worked for," Leo whispered, taking a slow step toward the suitcase. "Dad found out what they were burying under the foundation of the new research facility. He copied the files onto three encrypted drives. Two are gone. This suitcase holds the third one."

Clara stared at the boy, realizing with sudden, crushing horror that her brother-in-law had not abandoned his children to save them. He had used them as human cargo to smuggle state secrets right into her quiet, unsuspecting home.

Before Clara could form her next question, a sharp, metallic click echoed from inside the locked suitcase.
