Chapter 7

The searchlight swept past their hiding spot by mere feet, the glare reflecting off the wet pavement in a blinding halo. Above them, a black twin-engine tactical helicopter hovered between the narrow canyon of buildings, its downdraft whipping loose paper and plastic debris into a chaotic vortex.
"They're deploying ground units at both ends of the alley," Elena whispered, her eyes darting between the northern and southern exits. Shadows moved rhythmically against the flickering neon signs of the main boulevard fifty yards away—silhouettes of armed operatives converging on their position with methodical precision.
"We're trapped," Julian whispered, clutching his coat tightly around his chest as he pressed his back deeper against the cold brick wall. "There's no way out of this block without walking right into their crossfire."
"There's always a way out," Elena replied, her mind calculating angles, drainage capacities, and structural weaknesses with the cold precision of a veteran tactician. She grabbed the rusted handrail of the exterior steel staircase above them. "Can you climb?"
"I write articles for a living, Elena! I don't parkour across rooftops!" Julian hissed, though he grabbed the lower rung of the ladder when she hoisted him upward.
"Move," she urged, giving him a firm boost that sent him scrambling up the steps in a clatter of protesting metal.
Elena followed close behind, her tactical boots finding purchase on the slick rungs with effortless grace. Halfway up the three-story fire escape, the rhythmic thud of combat boots echoed from the mouth of the alley below. Shouted orders bounced off the brick walls—crisp, digitized communications from Syndicate enforcers wearing night-vision gear.
"Up there! On the fire escape!" a voice barked from the darkness below.
A suppressed firearm coughed twice. The bullets sparked violently against the iron railing just inches from Elena’s left hand, sending hot fragments of metal shrapnel ricocheting into the brickwork. She didn't flinch. She drew her pistol with her right hand, leaned out from the safety of the staircase stringer, and fired two rapid, calculated shots into the muzzle flashes below. A muffled cry of pain echoed from the alley floor, followed by the sound of a heavy body hitting the pavement.

"Keep moving, Julian!" Elena shouted, vaulting the final railing onto the flat gravel roof of the textile factory.
Julian tumbled onto the gravel, coughing and clutching his side, but he scrambled to his feet immediately, following Elena as she sprinted across the rooftop toward the opposite edge. The helicopter pivoted in the sky above them, its searchlight locking onto their figures with predatory certainty. The piercing chatter of a heavy-caliber weapon mounted on the aircraft’s skid tore through the night air, chewing chunks out of the parapet wall just ahead of them.
