Chapter 10

The safehouse was located on the sixteenth floor of an abandoned commercial office building in the heart of the financial district—a towering monolith of glass and steel that had gone bankrupt six months prior during a real-estate scandal orchestrated by none other than Marcus’s parent corporation.

The irony was not lost on Elena as she picked the electronic lock on the service entrance with a specialized wire tension tool. The door clicked open with a soft, mechanical pop, revealing a vast, dark floor filled with empty cubicles and plastic-wrapped office furniture that cast eerie, elongated shadows across the carpeted floor.

"How do you even know about this place?" Julian whispered, trailing closely behind her as they stepped into the cavernous space.

"Marcus’s corporation foreclosed on three dozen properties in this zip code last year to consolidate their debt holdings," Elena replied, her voice echoing softly in the empty room. "When you want to hide from a wolf, you don't build a fence in the woods. You sit in the middle of its empty den where it thinks it’s already won."

She guided Julian toward an interior windowless conference room that had been stripped of its electronics but still featured a heavy oak table and a reinforced door. She secured the door from the inside, wedging a heavy steel chair beneath the handle as an extra layer of defense.

Julian collapsed into one of the office chairs, setting his laptop case on the table. He plugged a portable battery pack into his machine, the screen springing to life with a harsh white glare that illuminated the tired, drawn lines of his face.

"We have about four hours before dawn," Julian said, his fingers resting on the trackpad. "If the data drop had the impact I think it did, Marcus’s stock value should start plummeting the moment the Tokyo exchange opens for trading in a few hours. That’s when he’s going to get desperate. Desperate men make mistakes, but they also strike hard."

"Which is why we aren't going to wait for him to come to us," Elena said, pulling a folded architectural blueprint from her tactical pack and spreading it across the dark oak table.

Julian leaned over the blueprints, squinting in the dim light. "What is this?"

"This is the basement sublevel of the Zenith Tower—Marcus’s corporate headquarters," Elena said, pressing her index finger against a heavily redacted section of the schematic near the sub-basement levels. "Project Janus isn't just a software protocol living on cloud servers. The core neural-mapping algorithms require a localized quantum server bank to process real-time data feeds. That server bank is housed three floors beneath his penthouse office."

"You're planning to hit the Zenith Tower?" Julian asked, his voice rising in disbelief. "Elena, that building has more security than a federal gold depository. Private military contractors, biometric scanners, armed patrols every ninety seconds—it's a fortress."

"It's a glass cage," Elena corrected, her dark eyes locking onto his with unwavering focus. "And every cage has a hinge. We go in through the maintenance shafts at dawn, while their security teams are shifting shifts and their executives are panicking over the stock market crash."
