Chapter 13

The red laser dots danced across Elena’s chest like burning embers. The two enforcers raised their weapons with cold, mechanical precision, their fingers tightening on the triggers.

Time seemed to dilate, stretching into an agonizingly slow fraction of a second where every detail crystallized into sharp focus: the hum of the server cooling fans, the faint blue glow of the LED indicators, the rigid line of Julian’s shoulders as he froze in terror near the core monolith.

Elena didn't hesitate. She dropped instantly to the concrete floor, her body sweeping low in a dynamic slide just as the suppressed submachine guns barked twice. The supersonic rounds punched through the air above her, shattering a cooling line on the server rack behind her and sending a high-pressure spray of supercooled liquid nitrogen hissing into the air in a blinding cloud of white vapor.

The dense fog instantly filled the center of the room, obscuring vision and scattering the red laser sights into erratic beams of light.

Capitalizing on the confusion, Elena sprang upward from her slide, launching herself directly through the vapor cloud toward the sound of the nearest operative’s breathing. She slammed her shoulder into the man’s chest, driving him backward into a protruding stack of steel server rails. His weapon clattered to the floor as he slumped into unconsciousness.

The second operative fired blindly into the fog, the muzzle flash illuminating his silhouette for a split second. Elena pivoted on her heel, closed the distance with explosive speed, and delivered a devastating roundhouse kick directly into the man’s temple. He dropped like a stone, his tactical helmet echoing loudly against the hard white floor tiles.

Through the dissipating cloud of nitrogen vapor, Elena saw Marcus standing near the open doorway, his calm facade finally fracturing into a look of genuine, cold realization as he watched his two best enforcers neutralized in seconds.

Elena didn't give him time to recover. She crossed the room in three rapid strides, grabbed Marcus by the lapel of his tailored suit, and slammed him firmly against the reinforced steel doorframe, her forearm pressing against his throat with controlled, unrelenting pressure.

"The game is over, Marcus," Elena whispered, her face inches from his, her dark eyes burning with the unyielding fire of a decade of survival. "The data is out. The servers are going up. There's no place left for you to hide."

Marcus choked for air, his hands grasping uselessly at her forearm, his aristocratic composure finally replaced by the raw, primal instinct of self-preservation. "You... you can't stop what's coming... the board... they'll just replace me..."

"Let them try," Elena said coldly.
