Chapter 5

The lead operative stepped into the amber glow of the monitors, his tactical axe held in a low, ready guard. He did not shout warnings or demand surrender. The Syndicate operated with ruthless, bureaucratic efficiency—there were no arrests for traitors, only permanent deletion.
Elena didn't wait for them to spread out. She launched herself forward, closing the distance before the second operative could clear the shattered doorframe. She slid low across the dusty concrete floor, her combat boots kicking up a cloud of debris, and drove her heel directly into the lead operative’s knee joint. A sickening crunch echoed through the cavernous room as the man’s leg buckled sideways. He dropped instantly, his axe clattering uselessly against the stone floor.
Before the second operative could react to his fallen comrade, Elena rebounded from her slide, springing upward with explosive force. She drove her palm upward beneath the man’s chin, snapping his head back against the reinforced rim of his helmet. Staggering backward, the operative swung his axe in a wild, blind arc meant to cleave her shoulder. Elena ducked beneath the whistling blade with millimeters to spare, pivoting on her left foot to deliver a vicious elbow strike directly into his ribs. The man gasped, the wind knocked completely from his lungs, and collapsed into a stack of old newsprint.
The third operative—larger than the others, his uniform reinforced with ceramic plating across the chest—advanced methodically. He raised his tactical axe high, bringing it down in a powerful, vertical chop designed to split Elena from crown to sternum.
Elena caught the descending haft of the axe with her left forearm, absorbing the crushing impact with a sharp grunt. The force drove her boots an inch into the concrete dust, but she refused to yield ground. With her right hand, she thrust her combat knife upward, aiming for the narrow seam in the operative’s neck armor. The blade deflected off the reinforced collar with a shower of tiny sparks, but the unexpected counter-attack threw the massive man off balance.
Capitalizing on his momentary hesitation, Elena hooked her right leg behind his ankle and twisted her torso with violent velocity. The heavy operative went down hard, the wind exploding from his lungs as he hit the concrete floor. Elena followed through instantly, pressing her knee firmly into his chest and bringing the pommel of her knife down against his helmet visor until the glass cracked and the man slumped into unconsciousness.
Breathing heavily, her chest heaving beneath the black tank top, Elena scanned the room. The three enforcers were down, neutralized in less than thirty seconds.
She turned her gaze back toward Julian. The journalist was staring at her with a mixture of absolute terror and profound reverence.

"Upload status?" Elena asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still pumping through her veins.
Julian blinked rapidly, tearing his eyes away from the unconscious forms on the floor to look at his monitor. "Ninety-eight percent," he choked out, his fingers trembling over the keys. "Ninety-nine. One hundred. It's done, Elena. The data is live across twelve independent mirror servers. There's no calling it back now."
