Chapter 14

Julian stumbled forward from behind the server rack, his breathing ragged, holding his portable terminal in trembling hands. He looked at Marcus pinned against the doorframe, then down at the thermite charge still clinging to the base of the quantum monolith.

"The local backups are fully wiped," Julian said, a grim sense of satisfaction breaking through his exhaustion. "I initiated the remote overwrite sequence. Every shadow server linked to Project Janus is currently self-destructing from the inside out. By noon, there won't be a single line of their surveillance code left running on this planet."

Elena slowly relaxed her grip on Marcus’s lapel, allowing the wealthy executive to stumble forward onto his knees, gasping for breath and clutching his throat as he glared up at her with undisguised hatred.

"You're ruined, Marcus," Elena said quietly, stepping back and reaching down to pull the safety pin on the thermite charge attached to the quantum server. "And unlike Arthur, you won't get a quiet burial in the dark. The whole world is going to watch your empire burn."

She grabbed Julian by the arm. "Move. We have thirty seconds before ignition."

They bolted through the open doorway, leaving Marcus kneeling on the cold floor of the server room, staring in horror at the small, hissing spark of the thermite charge beginning to glow with an intense, blinding white light.

As Elena and Julian sprinted down the subterranean service corridor toward the emergency exit stairs, a brilliant, soundless flash of thermal heat illuminated the hallway behind them, followed by a dull, concussive thud as the quantum server core melted into a puddle of slag and ruined silicon.

They burst through the heavy exterior maintenance doors of the Zenith Tower into the bright morning sunlight of the concrete plaza. The crisp autumn air hit their faces, carrying the distant sounds of city traffic, sirens, and the bustling hum of everyday life continuing unaware of the invisible war that had just been won in the shadows.

Julian collapsed onto a stone bench near the plaza fountain, burying his face in his hands as a long, shuddering sob of relief and exhaustion finally broke through his defenses. Elena stood beside him, leaning against the polished stone rim of the fountain, her grey zip-up jacket stained with soot and sweat, her dark hair still tied in its disciplined high ponytail.

She looked up at the towering glass facade of the Zenith Tower. On the upper floors, lights were flickering frantically as corporate executives rushed to offices that no longer possessed the data to sustain their grip on the city.
