Chapter 8 - The Interceptor’s Gift

The metallic chirp echoed again, closer this time, bouncing off the stone walls of the waterfall. Clara spun around, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Did Marcus send more men through the ridge?"

"No," Tariq whispered, stepping in front of Clara and his mother as a small, cylindrical object tumbled out of the canopy overhead and landed softly in the grass. It wasn't a grenade or a tracking beacon; it was a sleek, silver data relay cylinder bearing the distinct insignia of an independent intelligence syndicate.

Clara cautiously stepped forward, kneeling in the grass to inspect the device. "That's an offline quantum relay. Where did this come from?"

"Look up," Tariq said, pointing toward the dense treetops.

Perched on a thick branch high above them was a silent, solar-powered surveillance drone, its lens painted with a faded emblem that Clara recognized immediately—an emblem belonging to her own former mentor, Dr. Elena Vance, who had mysteriously disappeared five years ago after opposing the board's aggressive expansion tactics.

Clara’s breath hitched. "Elena? Is she... is she still alive?"

Tariq reached down and picked up the relay cylinder, twisting the base to activate its local display. A holographic projection flickered to life in the humid air between them, casting a soft blue glow over the elderly woman’s serene face.

Dr. Elena Vance’s face appeared in the projection, looking older and more weathered than Clara remembered, but her eyes possessed the same fierce intelligence.

"If you're watching this, Clara, it means you finally crossed the threshold from corporate predator to human being," Elena’s holographic voice said, the audio slightly distorted by static. "Marcus wasn't acting alone. The board didn't just want Tariq's encryption keys; they were planning a complete global shutdown of public infrastructure to force a debt-restructuring crisis."

Clara covered her mouth with her hand, staring at the projection in horror. "A global shutdown... They were going to blame it on rogue engineers."

"Precisely," Elena continued. "And Tariq’s mother holds the only biometric master key capable of overriding the failsafe protocol embedded in the grid. That’s why they hunted them down to that mudbrick dwelling."

Tariq looked down at his mother, a sudden wave of understanding washing over his face. "That's why you never let go of the shawl, Mom. You knew it wasn't just a blanket; it was the key to saving everyone."

The elderly woman nodded softly, offering a gentle smile that contrasted sharply with the terrifying implications of the message.

"You need to reach the central transmission tower in the city before midnight," Elena’s hologram concluded before beginning to flicker and fade. "And Clara? Watch your back. Marcus has already made a deal with the international enforcement bureau to brand you both as international terrorists."

The projection winked out, leaving the clearing bathed only in the natural light of the afternoon sun and the gentle sound of the waterfall.

May you like

Clara stared at the empty air where the hologram had been, the magnitude of their situation crashing down upon her. "Terrorists. They're going to erase us completely."
