Chapter 5 - Descent from the Sky

The heavy draft from the hovering drone whipped Clara’s blonde hair across her face, forcing her to shield her eyes. Marcus stumbled backward, his polished shoes losing traction in the loose dirt as he stared up at the unpainted, heavily armored aircraft.
"Whose bird is that?" Marcus yelled over the deafening roar of the rotors, his usual composure completely shattered. "Is that corporate security?"
Tariq shook his head, pulling his elderly mother further under the protective overhang of the mudbrick roof. "Corporate security doesn't fly military-grade hardware," Tariq shouted back. "That belongs to the people you sold my research to before you tried to frame me."
Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. She looked at Marcus with sudden, piercing clarity. "You didn't just steal my company, Marcus. You were selling our defense algorithms to foreign brokers all along."
Marcus’s face twisted into a mask of pure panic. He reached inside his jacket for a satellite communicator, but before his fingers could wrap around the device, a sharp crack split the air. A high-caliber round pierced the ground an inch from his boot, kicking up a shower of dirt and stone.
From the descending drone, a heavy metal ladder dropped with a loud metallic clatter, hitting the ground just ten feet away from where Clara stood. Heavily armed figures in unmarked tactical gear began to rappel down one by one, moving with terrifying, mechanical precision.
"We need to move, now!" Tariq grabbed Clara’s arm, his grip surprisingly strong, pulling her toward the back door of the mudbrick dwelling.
"I'm not leaving her!" Clara protested, looking back at the elderly woman, who remained surprisingly calm amidst the chaos, still cradling the gray cloth bundle.
"She's coming with us," Tariq said urgently, kicking open the wooden back door of the hut. "There's an escape tunnel beneath the floorboards. My father built it during the border conflicts decades ago."
Marcus scrambled backward, holding his hands up as the tactical operatives surrounded him, ignoring his frantic protests about his connections and status. Within seconds, Marcus was zip-tied and forced to his knees in the dust, his expensive suit ruined by the very dirt he had dismissed moments ago.
Clara followed Tariq into the cool, dark interior of the mudbrick home, dragging the elderly woman inside just as the roof of the front porch was shredded by a burst of suppressive fire from the drone above.

The darkness of the tunnel smelled of damp earth and old stone. As Tariq pulled a heavy iron lever to seal the trapdoor shut above them, plunging the escape route into absolute blackness, Clara heard a digital chime emanate from her designer handbag. She pulled out her phone and saw a single message on the screen from an unknown sender.
