Chapter 11 - The Trestle of No Return

The blinding glare of the searchlights illuminated the battered utility truck, painting the dust motes in the air like swirling embers. Enforcers in heavy tactical armor fanned out across the dirt road, their weapons raised and trained directly on the windshield.

"Shut the engine off and step out of the vehicle with your hands visible," a harsh voice crackled through a megaphone mounted on the lead van.

Tariq kept his foot hovering near the clutch, his jaw set in stubborn defiance. "They're not taking us alive. If they get their hands on the bundle, everything my father built—everything we fought for—is gone."

Clara reached across the seat and placed her hand over Tariq’s, stopping him from shifting into reverse. "Running back into the badlands is suicide, Tariq. Look at the terrain; they have thermal drones tracking every heat signature."

"So what do you suggest?" Tariq turned his head, his dark eyes meeting hers with fierce intensity. "Surrender? Let Marcus wipe us from the registry?"

"No," Clara said, a dangerous, calculating light returning to her eyes—not the cold corporate ambition of her past, but the sharp focus of a survivor. "We don't surrender. We use their own automated tracking protocols against them."

In the middle seat, the elderly woman opened her eyes, looking between the two of them. She reached into the leather satchel, pulled out the worn-out gray cloth bundle, and handed it directly to Clara without a single word.

Clara gasped, holding the fragile fabric in her hands. "Me? You want me to carry it?"

"She trusts you," Tariq said softly, watching his mother's serene expression. "And so do I. What’s the play, Clara?"

Clara popped open the passenger door just a few inches, holding the quantum relay cylinder in one hand and the gray cloth bundle in the other. She angled the relay toward the enforcers' searchlights, activating a high-frequency override signal she had memorized during her tenure on the board.

"Attention tactical unit," Clara broadcasted through the relay, mimicking the authoritative tone of the chief compliance officer with chilling precision. "This is Executive Director Sterling. Stand down immediately. The target asset is compromised by a rogue biological hazard. Secure the perimeter, but do not engage."

The megaphone crackled with hesitation. The enforcers lowered their weapons slightly, exchanging confused glances as the automated security systems on their tactical vans began to flash a warning amber light in response to Clara's high-level security ping.

"Step out of the vehicle for visual confirmation!" the megaphone blared back, the commander's voice laced with suspicion.

"Now, Tariq!" Clara yelled, slamming the door shut.

Tariq dropped the clutch, slamming his foot down on the gas pedal. The old utility truck didn't just move; it surged forward, roaring directly toward the abandoned railway trestle that spanned the deep canyon just to the left of the roadblock.
