Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The glowing screen of Clara’s phone illuminated the damp stone walls of the underground tunnel, casting eerie, dancing shadows across their faces. The message read simply: "The biometric lock is active. You have three minutes before the tunnel floods."

Clara gasped, holding the phone closer to Tariq. "Look at this! We're trapped. Who sent this?"

Tariq leaned in, his eyes narrowing as he examined the code attached to the notification. "It’s not an external threat," he whispered, his breathing heavy in the confined space. "It’s an automated failspray system. My own software recognizes us as intruders because we didn't enter the proper deactivation sequence at the surface."

Beside them, the elderly woman remained remarkably serene in the suffocating darkness, gently patting the gray cloth bundle as if it were a sleeping child. She reached out and touched Tariq’s arm, murmuring something soothing in her native tongue.

"Mom says we need to trust the foundation, not the walls," Tariq translated softly, a bittersweet smile touching his lips despite the mortal peril surrounding them.

"We don't have time for philosophy!" Clara’s voice cracked with rising panic. She pressed her back against the cold stone, her nude high heels clicking awkwardly on the uneven floor. "You said your father built this tunnel. Didn't he leave a manual override?"

"He did," Tariq said, crawling hurriedly through the narrow passage toward a rusted metal junction box set into the wall. "But it requires a dual biometric authentication. My thumbprint and... someone with matching familial markers."

Clara watched as Tariq pressed his thumb against the glowing scanner on the junction box. The device flashed a harsh, angry red. Access Denied.

"See?" Clara shouted over the distant, muffled sound of rushing water echoing from deeper within the tunnel network. "It won't work alone!"

"That's why my mother is here," Tariq said urgently, gesturing for the elderly woman to crawl forward.

The elderly woman moved with surprising agility for her age, crawling up beside her son. Without a word of hesitation, she pressed her thumb directly against the secondary scanner beside Tariq's. The device flickered, transitioning from red to a steady, hopeful amber.

"Now we need a third input," Tariq said, looking up at Clara with desperate eyes. "A corporate override code. One that only a senior executive with active clearance can input."

Clara froze. Her active clearance had been revoked by the board less than ten minutes ago, courtesy of Marcus’s digital coup. If she tried to input her credentials now, the system would permanently lock them inside a watery tomb.

"My clearance was wiped, Tariq," Clara whispered, tears finally pooling in her eyes as the reality of her helplessness washed over her. "I'm nobody out here."

"You're not nobody," Tariq said, his voice dropping to a fierce, steady whisper. "You stood up to Marcus. You held my mother's hand. Input your legacy code—the one from before you sold your soul to the board."

May you like

Clara hesitated for a single heartbeat, then slammed her fingers against the keypad, entering a sequence of numbers she hadn't typed in over a decade. The junction box clicked loudly, and suddenly, a massive steel bulkhead at the far end of the tunnel swung open, revealing a blinding flash of daylight.
