Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Threshold

The sudden appearance of the armed men froze the bitter argument in its tracks. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as a tall man in a tailored dark suit stepped past the enforcers, his polished leather shoes entirely out of place in the rural dust. It was Marcus, Clara’s ruthless business partner, who had clearly ignored her instructions and followed her coordinates.

"How touching," Marcus drawled, clapping his hands slowly in mock applause. "A family reunion in the middle of nowhere. Clara, I told you that sending you alone was a mistake. Sentimentality makes people weak."

Tariq instinctively pulled his mother back behind his shoulder, shielding her with his frail frame. Clara turned on Marcus, her eyes flashing with genuine fury as she stepped between him and the elderly woman. "This wasn't part of the agreement, Marcus! I told you I would handle Tariq myself without violence or intimidation."

"Agreements change when billions are on the line," Marcus replied smoothly, signaling the guards to lower their weapons slightly, though they remained alert. He turned his attention to Tariq, sizing up the impoverished man with a look of profound disgust. "So this is the brilliant engineer who brought our firm to its knees. Living in a mud hut while holding the master encryption keys in your head. Where are they, Tariq?"

Tariq glared at Marcus, refusing to shrink under the intimidating gaze. "You’ll never find them. I wiped the servers and destroyed the physical drives before I left the building."

"You think you destroyed them," Marcus smiled, a cold, predatory expression that chilled Clara to the bone. "People like you always leave a backup. And if you won't give it to us willingly, we have ways of convincing your precious mother to cooperate."

The elderly woman let out a soft, frightened gasp, burying her face against the worn-out gray cloth bundle. Tariq’s eyes bulged with sheer panic, his restraint finally snapping as he lunged forward toward Marcus. The enforcers reacted instantly, tackling Tariq to the ground and pinning his face into the dirt.

"Leave her alone!" Tariq screamed, thrashing beneath the boots of his captors. "She has nothing to do with this!"

Clara stepped forward, grabbing Marcus’s arm with a desperation that surprised even herself. "Stop this right now, Marcus, or I swear I will burn the entire operation to the ground from the inside!"

Marcus slowly turned his head to look at Clara, his smile vanishing entirely as he whispered something chilling into her ear.
