Chapter 6 - The Shadows Beneath the Bridge

The chilling words hung in the damp air like a death sentence. Leo’s sneakers hovered inches above the rusted iron grating of the maintenance stairs. His arms shook under the dead weight of a terrified, feverish Lily, who whimpered softly against his torn hoodie. The voice belonged to a stranger, yet it carried an intimate, venomous familiarity that suggested they had been watching him and his mother for a very long time.
"I said, turn around slowly and put the girl down," the unseen man commanded, his boots clicking rhythmically against the wet asphalt above.
Leo’s mind raced through a frantic maze of impossible choices. If he kept running down into the dark industrial maze beneath the bridge, he might lose these men in the fog, but Lily’s wounded leg needed medical attention urgently, and the blood was beginning to soak through his own jeans. If he turned back, he walked straight into the executioner's crosshairs. He clutched the iron key Arthur had given him so tightly that its jagged edges pierced the soft flesh of his palm, drawing a sharp sting of pain that grounded him in the terrifying reality of the moment.
He slowly turned his head to look back up over the concrete barrier. Through the thick veil of rain and mist, a tall figure in a dark trench coat stood silhouetted against the amber glow of the highway lights. The man held a silenced pistol casually at his side, while a few feet away, Arthur lay motionless on the wet pavement, a dark pool of blood slowly spreading from beneath his chest. Marcus was nowhere to be seen, swallowed either by the river below or the merciless night.
"You're too young to carry the burdens of Sarah's mistakes, boy," the armed man said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward the top of the stairs. "She thought she could outsmart the syndicate, but she left her children behind to pay her debts. Hand over the key, and I might let you and your sister die quickly."
Leo’s breath hitched. His mother wasn't just missing; these men were convinced she was dead. A sudden wave of hot, blinding rage eclipsed his terror. He refused to believe it. Sarah had promised she would be back by midnight, and Leo was going to hold her to that promise, even if he had to tear through every criminal organization in the city to find her.
He tightened his grip on Lily, backed down the first three steps into the shadows, and kicked the rusted metal access gate hard behind him, hearing the old padlock snap under the strain. He plunged headfirst into the darkness of the lower level, just as a bullet sparked off the iron railing right where his ear had been a second before.
He ran blindly through the labyrinth of concrete pillars and damp brick walls, the sound of heavy boots echoing behind him in hot pursuit. The air smelled of stagnant river water and rotting wood. He turned a sharp corner, seeking any place to hide, only to find himself trapped at a dead end facing a high brick wall.

And then, a gloved hand suddenly reached out from the pitch-black alcove beside him, clamped firmly over his mouth, and yanked him backward into the dark.
