Chapter 1 - The Cold Rejection

Leo stood frozen on the asphalt, his arms aching beneath the dead weight of his sobbing toddler sister. The yellow taxi engine hummed with an indifferent, mechanical growl, vibrating right through the worn rubber soles of his sneakers. Inside the cab, the driver stared straight ahead, his knuckles tight against the steering wheel.
"Do you have any money?" the man had asked, his voice entirely flat, stripped of any human warmth.
"I have no money, please help my sister!" Leo cried out, his chest heaving as hot tears carved muddy tracks through the city grime on his cheeks. Lily buried her face deeper into the dark blue fabric of his hoodie, her little pink sneakers dangling helplessly as she whimpered in pain.
The driver didn’t turn his head. He just adjusted his rearview mirror, his dark eyes refusing to meet the desperate gaze of the young boy standing in the freezing drizzle.
"Kid, this isn't a charity service," the driver said, his tone sharpening as he shifted the gear into drive. "Gas isn't free. My time isn't free. Go find a payphone and call your parents."
"They're not home! Nobody is answering!" Leo shouted, his voice cracking with sheer panic. He took a desperate step forward, pressing his palm flat against the yellow metal of the passenger door. "Look at her leg! It's bleeding badly! She needs stitches! Please, I'll work for you! I'll clean your car, I'll do anything!"
The driver sighed heavily, a puff of white condensation escaping the cracked window. "Move your hand, kid. You're blocking traffic. Get on the sidewalk."
"You can't just leave us here!" Leo yelled, the restrained fear inside him finally breaking open into raw, unfiltered anger. "What kind of person ignores a bleeding child? Are you completely heartless?"
The driver finally turned his head, his face hardening into a stone-cold mask. He looked right at Leo, then down at Lily’s blood-soaked pink shirt.
"Watch your mouth, boy," the driver warned, his voice dropping an octave. "You don't know who I am, and you certainly don't know what I'm carrying in the trunk."

Before Leo could process the chilling threat, the backseat door suddenly swung wide open from the inside.
