Chapter 12 - The Serpent Within

The morning sun began to bleed over the jagged skyline of the industrial district, casting long, bruised shadows across the railyard. Sirens wailed in the distance, a chaotic chorus of police cruisers and ambulances finally converging on Sector 7. The paramedics rushed forward with a stretcher, gently lifting Lily from Leo’s aching arms and placing her inside the warm, sterile interior of the ambulance, attaching an IV drip to her pale, trembling arm.
Sarah climbed into the back of the ambulance beside her daughter, holding Lily’s small, feverish hand. She looked out the open doors at Leo, who stood frozen on the gravel beside Arthur, reluctant to step inside until he knew the adults were safe.
"Leo, get in," Sarah urged gently, her eyes full of lingering anxiety. "We're going to the hospital together. No more running."
Leo nodded, taking a half-step toward the ambulance. But his eyes drifted back to the federal transport van parked a few yards away. The lead investigator—the man who had supposedly rescued them and praised Agent Vance—was leaning against the side door, speaking quietly into a secure radio.
As the man turned his head in the pale morning light, the collar of his tactical shirt shifted slightly. Etched into the skin of his neck was a small, dark tattoo: a coiled serpent with an open mouth, identical to the emblem Leo had seen on the keychain of the very first corrupt executive his mother had tried to expose months ago.
Leo froze. A cold knot twisted tightly in his stomach. The federal cavalry hadn't arrived to save them because of a lucky tip. They had arrived because the syndicate had orchestrated the entire rescue to secure the flash drive back into their own hands under the guise of law enforcement.
"Arthur," Leo whispered urgently, grabbing the older man's sleeve. "Look at his neck. The tattoo. He's one of them."
Arthur’s expression instantly hardened. He spun around, his eyes locking onto the investigator, who had just finished his radio call and was now walking toward them with a chilling, predatory smile plastered across his face.
"Good eye, kid," the investigator said smoothly, resting his hand casually near the holster of his sidearm as two other 'federal agents' flanked him, stepping out from behind the transport van and blocking the path to the ambulance. "Sarah thought she could outsmart the department. But the truth is, the department is Viktor."
Arthur stepped in front of Leo, his body tense and ready for a confrontation, despite his healing shoulder wound. "Agent Miller. I wondered when you would finally crawl out from the upper management offices to finish the job yourself."
Miller chuckled coldly, his eyes gleaming with malicious amusement. "Arthur, you really should have stayed retired. You and your little stray kids are about to become a very unfortunate statistic in a botched federal raid."

Before Arthur could draw his concealed weapon, Miller’s radio crackled to life with a frantic message that made the corrupt agent’s smile instantly vanish.
