Chapter 5 - The Ambush on the Bridge

The metal shriek of grinding steel tore through the night air as the black sedan rammed the taxi a second time, sending the yellow cab skidding wildly across the wet asphalt of the overpass. Marcus wrestled with the steering wheel, swearing loudly in Spanish as the tires lost traction on the rain-slicked bridge.

"Hold on!" Arthur roared, bracing his hands against the dashboard as the taxi spun in a complete three-hundred-degree arc before slamming hard into the concrete guardrail.

The impact rattled Leo's teeth. He threw his entire body over Lily, shielding her small frame with his own as glass shattered inward from the rear window. A sharp piece of debris grazed Leo's shoulder, drawing a thin line of bright red blood, but he didn't care. He could hear Lily crying again, a terrified, high-pitched wail that broke his heart.

"Marcus, get us out of here!" Arthur yelled, unbuckling his seatbelt with practiced speed.

Marcus punched the accelerator, but the engine only whined in protest, smoke billowing thickly from under the crumpled hood. "The radiator's busted, Boss! We're dead in the water!"

Across the narrow lane, the black sedan had come to a sliding halt, blocking their only escape route off the bridge. The passenger doors of the sedan clicked open simultaneously. Two large men dressed in matching dark tactical gear stepped out into the rain, their faces obscured by ski masks, each holding a suppressed firearm that gleamed dully under the amber streetlights.

Leo’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. This wasn't a movie; this was real. Real guns, real blood, real danger.

"Leo, listen to me," Arthur said, turning around and grabbing Leo firmly by the shoulders. His voice was completely devoid of panic, radiating a chilling, tactical calm. "In the glove compartment, there is a black leather case. Open it. Inside, you'll find a passport and a small iron key. Take Lily and run toward the maintenance stairs on the right side of the bridge."

"I can't leave you!" Leo cried, tears streaming down his face as the sound of heavy boots echoed against the wet concrete outside.

"You aren't leaving me, you're saving your sister," Arthur commanded, pressing the iron key directly into Leo's cold, trembling palm. "That key unlocks the storage locker at the central bus station. Locker 44. Inside is everything you need to find your mother. Now go, before they reach the door!"

Marcus lunged across the center console, pushing the passenger door open with a brutal kick. "Go, kid! Run!"

Leo didn't hesitate anymore. He scooped Lily up into his arms, ignoring the blinding pain in his shoulder, and scrambled out of the passenger side door into the freezing downpour. As he hit the pavement, a silenced gunshot cracked through the air, shattering the side mirror right where his head had been a second before.

He bolted toward the rusted metal staircase descending into the dark, foggy abyss beneath the bridge, his breath ragged and burning in his lungs.

Behind him, the muffled sounds of shouting and a scuffle erupted, followed immediately by a sharp, metallic thud and a heavy groan that sounded unmistakably like Arthur. Leo froze on the top step, his foot hovering over the first drop into the darkness, torn between running to safety and turning back to face the monsters hunting them.

Then, a harsh, unfamiliar voice boomed from the bridge above, echoing off the concrete walls and freezing Leo completely in his tracks.

"Drop the kid, Leo," the voice sneered. "We know your mother is already dead. And you're next."
