Chapter 4 - The Torn Photograph

The polaroid fluttered slightly in the dim light of the dashboard, casting long, distorted shadows across Arthur's lined face. Leo stared at the image, his breath catching in his throat. The woman in the picture wasn't just anyone; she was Sarah, the woman who had kissed his forehead just three hours ago before rushing out the door with a frantic promise that she would be right back.

"That's... that's my mom," Leo whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the syllables. "Where did you get that? Who are you to her?"

Arthur carefully folded the photograph back up and slid it into his coat pocket. "I was her partner, Leo. A long time ago, before she ran away with secrets that didn't belong to her. Secrets that people are willing to kill for."

Marcus slammed on the brakes as a red light suddenly flashed ahead, throwing both boys forward against the back of the front seats. Lily stirred, letting out a soft, distressed murmur before settling back into her uneasy slumber.

"Boss, cut the exposition," Marcus snapped, gripping the steering wheel as he checked the side mirrors. "We're being tailed. A black sedan has been two car lengths behind us since we left the third street intersection. It's them."

Arthur didn't panic. He calmly looked out the back window, his eyes narrowing as he observed the unmarked vehicle cruising steadily in their wake. "Stay calm, Marcus. Take the off-ramp toward the industrial district. Let's see if they're actually following us or just heading the same way."

"Are you insane?" Leo shouted, forgetting his fear for a moment as anger flared in his chest. "My sister is bleeding! You promised you were taking her to the hospital! You lied to us!"

"I didn't lie, Leo. I said we are going to get her help," Arthur said, turning back around to face the boy with intense, unyielding sincerity. "But right now, the people in that car behind us want the very thing your mother left hidden in your house. If we go straight to a public hospital, they will corner us, and neither you nor your sister will walk out alive."

Leo’s mind raced. Everything inside him screamed that this man was a criminal, a dangerous liar spinning an elaborate web to manipulate him. But then he remembered the locked metal box his mother had shoved beneath their floorboards just before she vanished into the rainy night, telling him never to open it unless she didn't return by midnight.

"My mom... she left a box," Leo admitted, the words slipping out before he could stop them. "Under the floorboards in the kitchen. She said... she said it was our only protection."

Arthur’s eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous intensity. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a breathless urgency. "Leo, listen to me very carefully. That box doesn't contain protection. It contains the ledger that can put a syndicate away for life. And right now, the man following us... he knows you have the key."

Before Leo could ask what ledger Arthur was talking about, the black sedan behind them suddenly accelerated, its high-beam headlights blinding them as it violently swerved into the adjacent lane and slammed its bumper directly into the driver's side of their taxi.
