Chapter 11 - The Federal Intervention

The blinding wash of the helicopter spotlight threw the railyard into chaotic disarray. The masked guards scrambled frantically, shielding their eyes from the glare as heavily armed federal agents rappelled down ropes from the hovering aircraft, landing with practiced precision in a defensive perimeter around the freight cars.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" shouts echoed from all directions as tactical officers in black armor advanced with rifles drawn, their laser sights painting red dots across the chests of Viktor’s men.
The lead gunman cursed loudly, momentarily hesitating between firing at Leo or trying to escape into the maze of boxcars. That split-second hesitation cost him. A federal tactical officer lunged forward, tackling the gunman hard into the gravel and pinning his arms behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.
Sarah broke free from the stunned guard holding her, stumbling frantically across the rocky ground toward Leo.
"Leo! Oh, my God, my baby!" she sobbed, dropping to her knees in the dirt and pulling both Leo and Lily into a desperate, tearful embrace. She buried her face in Leo's messy light-brown hair, kissing his bruised cheek over and over again. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you? I am so, so sorry, Leo. I never meant for any of this to touch you."
"We're okay, Mom," Leo whispered, burying his face in her shoulder as the adrenaline finally drained out of his body, leaving him shaking uncontrollably. "We found Arthur... and Marcus... they helped us."
Sarah pulled back sharply, her expression darkening with alarm as she looked around the chaotic scene. "Arthur? You saw Arthur? Where is he, Leo?"
Before Leo could answer, a familiar, calm voice spoke from behind them.
"I'm right here, Sarah. Though I must admit, getting shot at by your former employers is becoming a rather exhausting habit."
Sarah gasped, turning around to see Arthur stepping out from the shadow of a freight car. He was wearing a heavy trench coat, with a thick white bandage wrapped securely around his left shoulder, leaning slightly on a federal agent for support, but his sharp, analytical eyes were as clear and steady as ever.
"Arthur! You're alive," Sarah breathed, a mixture of immense relief and guilt washing over her face. "I thought Viktor’s men killed you on the bridge."
"They tried," Arthur smiled faintly, walking over to join their embrace. "But old habits die hard, and I had a promise to keep to your children."
As federal agents led the arrested syndicate members away in handcuffs toward waiting transport vans, the lead federal investigator approached Arthur and Sarah, holding up the recovered leather satchel and the flash drive.
"We have the decryption keys and the complete financial ledger," the investigator reported, looking down briefly at Lily, who was still resting unconscious in Leo's arms with a dangerous, swollen feverish leg. "Agent Vance, your team did good work. But that little girl needs an ambulance right now. The infection in her leg is severe."

Arthur nodded grimly, turning to Leo and placing a gentle hand on the boy's shoulder. "Your sister is safe now, Leo. The nightmare is finally over. But as the federal agents moved to secure the area, a chilling realization hit Leo when he noticed a familiar symbol carved into the transport van’s tire—the exact same snake emblem that had been tattooed on the neck of the federal investigator now speaking to Arthur."
