Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

The digital notification banner on Clara’s phone flashed brightly in the dim light of the hospital room, casting a cold blue glow across her tired features. Ethan stared at the screen, unable to look away from the headline scrolling across the top of the financial news app.

“STERLING REALTY ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY BOARD RESHUFFLE; CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER ETHAN HAYES SEVERED FROM FIRM AMID UNVERIFIED SCANDAL.”

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. In less than twenty minutes, Arthur Sterling hadn't just frozen his bank accounts; he had publicly executed his professional reputation, framing his sudden disappearance from the wedding as a catastrophic moral failure to protect the corporate brand. Ethan’s entire identity—every promotion, every award, every flattering profile in the Sunday business section—was being systematically scrubbed from the internet in real-time.

"They didn't just fire me," Ethan whispered, the blood draining completely from his face. "They’re destroying me. They’re making an example out of me so no one in this city ever dares cross Arthur Sterling again."

"Did you expect mercy from a shark, Ethan?" Clara asked, though her voice lacked its earlier bite, replaced now by a grim, unsettling reality. She reached down to stroke the baby's soft cheek, her expression hardening against the rising tide of chaos outside the hospital walls. "You stepped into their world willingly. You traded your past, your friends, and your integrity for a corner office and a trust fund. When you play their game, you lose on their terms."

"I have to leave," Ethan said suddenly, panic surging through his veins as he realized the full scope of his vulnerability. "If Arthur has control of my corporate accounts, he probably has control of my apartment lease. My car is registered through the firm's fleet. They're going to repossess everything. I don't even have a change of clothes, let alone a place to sleep tonight."

"And you think running back to your empty apartment is going to solve anything?" Clara challenged, her eyes flashing with sudden fury as she sat up straighter against the pillows. "You think you can just check out of here and go back to playing the victim? My son's name is on that registry now, Ethan. You are tied to this room, to this child, whether you have a penthouse or a cardboard box under a bridge."

"I'm not running away!" Ethan snapped back, his voice rising above a whisper for the first time, echoing off the sterile tile walls. "I'm trying to figure out how to survive! You think I want to be a homeless father in a tuxedo? I need to find my phone, I need to call a lawyer—a real lawyer, not one of Arthur's cronies—and I need to figure out what's left of my life!"

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving with suppressed emotion. Slowly, she reached into the drawer of the bedside table and pulled out a heavy, prepaid burner phone, sliding it across the metal tray toward him.

"Use this," she said coldly. "Number's pre-loaded with one contact. The only lawyer in this city who hates Arthur Sterling more than you do."
