Chapter 13 - The Echoes in the Tunnel

The heavy footsteps reverberated down the damp concrete corridor, growing louder and faster with every passing second. Flashlight beams cut through the gloom like surgical lasers, dancing wildly against the rusted pipes and dripping walls.

"We've been compromised," Victor hissed, grabbing Ethan by the shoulder and shoving him hard against the cold steel door. "Arthur had a backdoor bypass on Madeleine's fob all along. He knew you'd try to use it!"

"Open the door!" Ethan panicked, hammering his fist against the locked steel panel. "Do something, Victor! They're going to catch us!"

"Stand back!" Victor pulled a small, modified digital hacking device from his trench coat, slamming its leads directly into the maintenance keypad’s exposed wiring interface. The screen flickered violently, cycling through lines of green code as the alarm klaxon wailed overhead in an ear-piercing shriek. "I'm bypassing the local terminal, but it's going to take thirty seconds to override the master mainframe upstairs!"

"We don't have thirty seconds!" Ethan yelled, looking back down the tunnel as two figures in heavy tactical gear rounding the corner, their flashlights blindingly bright in the darkness.

"Federal agents! Freeze right where you are!" a harsh voice commanded over the din of the alarm.

"Hold on!" Victor snarled, his fingers flying across the hacking device's tiny keyboard as the green code turned solid amber.

With a deafening mechanical snap, the heavy steel door popped open a fraction of an inch. Without hesitating, Victor kicked it wide open, dragging Ethan inside just as a volley of shouted commands and rushing boots echoed behind them. They tumbled onto the polished concrete floor of the Sterling Tower basement archive, Victor slamming the heavy door shut and engaging the manual override lock from the inside just as a heavy fist hammered violently against the exterior panel.

"Open up! Sterling Security! You're trespassing on federal property!" a muffled voice shouted through the steel.

Ethan scrambled to his feet, panting heavily, his tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder and smeared with gray soot. The basement archive was vast, lined with rows of towering metal filing cabinets and digital server racks humming quietly in the dim, climate-controlled air.

"We're trapped," Ethan breathed, looking around the windowless room with rising dread. "There's only one exit, and they're standing right outside it."

"Not the only exit," Victor said calmly, brushing dust off his trench coat as he walked toward a heavy oak door at the far end of the archive room. "That door leads directly to the executive elevator shaft, which bypasses the ground floor entirely and goes straight up to your private office on the forty-fifth floor."

Ethan stared at him, bewildered. "My office is locked with a biometric vault safe! Even if we get up there, we can't open it without my fingerprint scanner, which Arthur probably disabled remotely by now!"

Victor turned around, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth as he pulled a small, heavy black drive from his pocket—an exact duplicate of the encrypted backup Ethan had hidden that very morning.

"Who said anything about using your fingerprint?" Victor said softly. "I didn't need you to steal the drive, Ethan. I needed you to distract them while I downloaded it from the network five minutes ago."
