Chapter 15 - The Final Ledger

The silence in the grand forty-fifth-floor office was absolute, broken only by the distant, muted hum of city traffic far below the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Arthur Sterling stood beside the executive desk, his posture rigid and authoritative, his gray eyes fixed on Victor Vance with undisguised triumph.
"You're trespassing, Victor," Arthur said smoothly, resting one hand casually on the mahogany surface. "And more importantly, you're holding stolen property belonging to Sterling Realty."
Victor didn't flinch. He tossed the small black encrypted drive up into the air and caught it effortlessly, a cold smile playing on his lips. "It's not stolen property, Arthur. It's evidence. Every shell company, every municipal bribe, every falsified audit report from the past decade is backed up on this little piece of plastic. And as of midnight, copies of this drive have been automatically uploaded to three federal prosecutors and every major news outlet in the country."
Arthur’s confident smirk flickered for a fraction of a second, the first sign of genuine panic crossing his guarded features. He took a half-step forward, his voice dropping into a dangerous snarl. "You're bluffing. You don't have the network access."
"Check your terminal," Victor replied, nodding toward the sleek desktop monitor on the desk.
Arthur’s gaze darted to the screen. The monitor flickered, the corporate desktop wallpaper instantly replaced by a command prompt scrolling lines of raw financial data at blinding speed. The master archives were wide open, streaming directly to federal servers.
Arthur turned back, his face drained of all color, his eyes burning with fury as he looked past Victor straight at Ethan, who stood frozen near the elevator doors.
"You fool," Arthur hissed, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. "You had everything. Power, money, a dynasty. And you threw it all away for a charity-ward bastard and a girl from nowhere."
"I threw away a cage," Ethan said, his voice surprisingly steady as he stepped forward into the glaring light of the office. He looked Arthur dead in the eye, feeling the last vestiges of fear and hesitation evaporate from his chest. "I'm not your puppet anymore, Arthur. My name is on the registry. My son is waiting for me at the hospital. And I am going to walk out of this building a free man, even if I have to do it with nothing in my pockets."
Before Arthur could lunge forward, the heavy oak doors of the private elevator slid open once more, not with a chime, but with the heavy, coordinated boots of federal marshals moving in synchronized formation, badges flashing brightly in the overhead lights.
"Arthur Sterling, you're under arrest for securities fraud, corporate corruption, and racketeering," the lead federal agent announced, stepping past Ethan and placing cold steel handcuffs around Arthur's wrists.
The billionaire real estate mogul didn't resist. He allowed himself to be led away into the elevator, his cold, hateful eyes locked onto Ethan until the mahogany doors slid shut, sealing him away from the empire he had built on lies.
The office fell quiet once more. Victor Vance slipped the encrypted drive into his pocket, gave Ethan a brief, respectful nod, and walked into the elevator alone, leaving Ethan standing in the center of the vast, empty room.

Ethan walked slowly to the massive glass window, looking out over the sprawling, glittering expanse of the city below. The sun was beginning to break over the eastern horizon, casting a warm, golden glow across the skyline. He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against the cracked remnants of his old life, but he didn't care.
Without looking back, Ethan turned away from the glass, walked into the elevator, and pressed the button for the ground floor, heading home to the gray blanket and the only truth that mattered.
