Chapter 6 - The Ultimatum on the Line

The phone continued to buzz against the sterile metal table, the vibration producing a low, rhythmic hum that seemed to mock the absolute silence of the room. Ethan stared at the glowing screen as if it were a venomous creature coiled and ready to strike. The name Arthur Sterling burned in bright digital letters, a direct summons from the man who held the keys to his entire professional and social existence.
"I'm waiting, Ethan," Clara said, her voice cutting cleanly through the heavy air of the hospital room. She didn't reach for the device; she left it entirely in his domain, forcing him to acknowledge the invisible chains he had willingly worn for the past two years. "Pick it up. Tell your future father-in-law that you are standing in a maternity ward instead of a cathedral. Let's see how much his precious corporate empire matters when the bill comes due."
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat constricted by a knot of raw panic. His hand hovered over the device. If he swiped to answer, he would have to speak the truth aloud, confirming Arthur’s darkest suspicions and instantly activating the financial annihilation detailed in the letter. Every bank account, every stock option, every high-rise office overlooking the city harbor would vanish in a digital keystroke. Yet, if he ignored the call and walked away from Madeleine at the altar without a word, he would spend the rest of his life running from a ghost of his own creation.
With a trembling index finger, Ethan reached out and pressed the green accept button. He brought the phone slowly to his ear, his breathing shallow and erratic.
"Ethan," Arthur's voice boomed through the speaker, devoid of warmth, dripping with calculated authority. "The organ music has stopped playing in the sanctuary. The guests are whispering, and Madeleine is pacing in the vestry. You have exactly three minutes to walk back down that aisle and say your vows, or I promise you that you will never work in this city—or any other—again. Where the hell are you?"
Ethan opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. His tongue felt heavy, glued to the roof of his mouth. He glanced down at the newborn baby sleeping peacefully in the gray blanket, then looked across at Clara, whose gaze was unyielding and sharp as broken glass.
"Arthur," Ethan finally managed to croak out, his voice thin and hollow. "I... I can't come back."
May you like
A heavy, suffocating silence stretched across the line, pregnant with impending doom, before Arthur spoke with terrifying calm: "Consider your life as you know it terminated."
