Chapter 3 - The Quiet Room

Clara looked up from the hospital bed as the door creaked wider. She looked exhausted, her face pale save for the dark circles under her eyes, but her expression possessed an unsettling, profound calm. Cradled in her arms, wrapped tightly in a coarse gray woolen blanket, was an infant sleeping with absolute tranquility. A tiny fist rested against the edge of the blanket, curling outward in a gesture of pure vulnerability.
Ethan stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind him as if afraid to wake the world outside. The air smelled of rubbing alcohol, newborn skin, and faint laundry detergent.
"You shouldn't have come," Clara said softly, breaking the thick silence. Her voice lacked anger; it held only a weary kind of finality. "Your guests are waiting at the church, Ethan. Madeleine is waiting."
Ethan swallowed hard, his throat dry as sandpaper. He walked slowly toward the bed, his gaze fixed on the small bundle in her arms. "How could you expect me to stay there when you're here with... with this?" He gestured weakly toward the baby, unable to form the word 'child' or 'son.'
Clara shifted slightly, adjusting the blanket to shield the infant from the harsh fluorescent light overhead. "Because you made a choice two years ago, Ethan. You chose the life of comfort, the high-society wedding, and the predictable future. I didn't ask you to be here today. I only called because you deserved to know that your blood is breathing in this room."
Ethan stopped at the foot of the bed, his hands gripping the metal railing. He looked from Clara’s tired, unyielding eyes down to the tiny, sleeping face of the baby. A sharp pang of recognition struck him like a physical blow. The shape of the nose, the curve of the chin—there was no denying the genetics.
"Is it a boy?" Ethan asked, his voice cracking slightly against his will.
Clara looked down at the infant, a faint, tender smile touching the corners of her mouth before she looked back up at Ethan, her eyes locking onto his with terrifying clarity.

"Yes," she whispered. "And he has your eyes, Ethan. Exactly your eyes."
