Chapter 8 - The Name on the Registry

The fluorescent lights hummed overhead, casting a harsh, unblinking glare across the small hospital room. The nurse stood waiting, pen poised above the clipboard, her professional detachment entirely oblivious to the psychological warfare playing out in the space between the bed and the floor.
Ethan slowly pushed himself up from the wall, his tuxedo jacket pulling tight across his shoulders. He felt stripped of every protective layer he had meticulously constructed over the past two years. Without his money, his status, or Arthur Sterling’s backing, he was just Ethan—a terrified, unprepared young man standing in a charity ward.
"My name is Ethan Hayes," he said, his voice steadying despite the tremor in his hands. He stepped forward, walking toward the bed where Clara watched him with an inscrutable gaze. "I am the father."
The nurse nodded briskly, jotting the information down without a second glance. "Very well. Mr. Hayes, you'll need to sign the acknowledgment of paternity form at the front desk before noon. Once that's filed, we can proceed with the final pediatric clearance." With a polite nod, she turned on her heel and slipped out into the hallway, leaving the heavy door half-open.
Silence reclaimed the room, thick and suffocating. Clara looked down at the baby, who stirred slightly, letting out a soft, bubbling sigh before settling back into deep sleep.
"Why did you do that?" Clara asked quietly, her eyes searching Ethan's face. "You could have walked out of here five minutes ago, gotten into your car, and pretended none of this ever happened. Arthur would have covered your tracks. You could still be flying to the Bahamas with Madeleine by tonight."
"Because I'm not a coward," Ethan said, though the words tasted bitter and unearned on his tongue. He stepped closer to the bedside, looking down at the tiny face that mirrored his own features with terrifying accuracy. "Or at least... I don't want to be anymore. I spent two years running away from my responsibilities because I was afraid of failing. Look at what it got me. I'm ruined anyway. I might as well fail honestly."
Clara let out a short, humorless breath, shaking her head. "Honesty is a luxury, Ethan. It costs more than you can afford right now."
Before Ethan could reply, the harsh buzzing of his pocket startled them both. It wasn't his smartphone—that device lay cracked and forgotten on the marble floor of St. Jude’s sanctuary miles away. It was a low, mechanical chime coming from the pager clipped inside the pocket of his tuxedo vest, an automated alert from his corporate office signaling a priority emergency override.
Ethan pulled the small device out. The digital display flashed an urgent alphanumeric code: ACCOUNTS FROZEN. AUDIT INITIATED.
He stared at the screen in numb horror. It had taken Arthur less than ten minutes to execute his threat.

Clara leaned forward, reading the reflection of the screen in Ethan’s wide, terrified eyes. "Looks like your new life has officially begun," she whispered, her voice dropping to a chilling murmur as her own phone suddenly lit up with a breaking news alert from a financial wire service.
