Chapter 9 - The Almond Scent

The sweet, suffocating odor of cyanide gas filled the subterranean room within seconds, stinging their nostrils and making their eyes water instantly. Arthur coughed violently, pulling his suit jacket up over his nose and mouth while instinctively throwing his body over his mother’s wheelchair to shield her from the falling vapor.

"The ventilation... it's tied to the main surface grid," Arthur choked out, his vision beginning to blur at the edges as the chemical agent rapidly took effect in the confined space. "She’s flooding the entire lower level."

Sophie didn't hesitate. Grabbing a heavy steel clipboard from the desk, she leaped toward the air intake vent mounted high on the concrete wall. With a series of frantic, desperate strikes, she smashed the plastic louver grille until it cracked and shattered, exposing the metal ductwork behind it.

"Help me lift the chair!" Sophie yelled over the roaring hiss of the gas release. Her injured arm screamed in agony as she gripped the rear frame of Sarah Morel’s wheelchair, her face contorting with pain and exertion.

Arthur scrambled to his feet, abandoning his jacket as he grabbed the front footrests. With a coordinated heave, they hoisted the heavy medical chair upward, wedging it directly into the gaping hole of the ventilation shaft just as the secondary security doors at the entrance slammed shut with a definitive, mechanical thud.

The heavy iron door was sealed tight from the outside. There was no keypad, no manual release, and no way back through the archives.

Sarah Morel gripped Arthur’s arm with surprising strength, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the residual gas swirled around them. "Listen to me, Arthur... don't trust the lawyers. Don't trust the board. The entire shipping merger was a hostile takeover orchestrated by Victoria and her brother posing as our corporate consultants."

Arthur’s head swam, the neuro-suppressants in his system reacting violently with the adrenaline and the trace amounts of cyanide in the air. "Her brother? Victoria doesn't have a family... she told me she was an orphan."

"She lied about everything," Sarah gasped, her eyes glazing slightly before she forced herself to focus. "His name is Julian Vance—the doctor who signed my commitment papers and your prescription logs. They are husband and wife, Arthur. They planned to eliminate our entire bloodline to seize absolute control of the Morel maritime fleet."

The revelation hit Arthur like a physical blow. Victoria—the elegant, poised woman he had trusted as a partner and confidante for three years—wasn't just a gold-digger; she was part of a calculated criminal syndicate that had systematically destroyed his family from the inside out.

Sophie pressed her ear against the metal ductwork above the wheelchair, her face lighting up with a sudden spark of hope. "The duct doesn't go back up to the mansion! It's an old industrial exhaust line that vents directly out into the estate's private boathouse by the lake."

Arthur looked at his mother, then toward the narrow metal tube. There was barely enough room for a person to crawl, let alone push a wheelchair.

"You go," Sarah whispered, pushing Arthur away with a weak, trembling hand. "Get to the harbor master. File the emergency injunction before the board meeting commences at dawn. Save the company, Arthur. Leave me here."

"I'm not leaving you, Mother," Arthur said firmly, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. "We all go together, or none of us do."

Before Sarah could protest, the heavy iron door behind them began to buckle inward with a deafening screech as heavy hydraulic equipment was applied from the outside corridor. Victoria’s cold, amplified voice echoed through the speaker system mounted on the wall.

"Give it up, Arthur," Victoria’s voice purred, dripping with venomous amusement. "The board is already convening upstairs. By sunrise, you’ll be legally declared insane, and Blackwood Manor will belong to me."
