Chapter 6 - The Subterranean Blueprint

The glowing red indicator on the service elevator panel crept lower and lower, passing the zero marker and blinking into the negative numbers—Level Minus Two. Arthur stared at the monitor, his mind reeling as the neat, orderly world he thought he controlled shattered completely. He had spent his entire adult life believing his father died of natural heart failure, and that his mother’s subsequent decline was a tragic stroke of genetic misfortune.

"There is no Level Minus Two," Arthur said, his voice flat with disbelief. "The architectural plans filed with the city stop at the wine cellar on Level One."

"That's because the lower level was sealed off thirty years ago after the remodeling," Sophie said quickly, her fingers flying across the auxiliary keyboard on Marcus's desk, trying to bypass the secondary firewall. "Victoria had the entrance bricked over. But the old freight elevator shaft still runs straight down through the bedrock."

On the floor, Marcus groaned, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the gray linoleum. He chuckled darkly, wiping his split lip with the back of his sleeve.

"You think you can just go down there, Morel?" Marcus wheezed, leaning his head back against the server rack. "Victoria has already called the board. By morning, the emergency trustees will convene, declare you mentally unfit based on your medical history, and seize absolute control of the shipping empire. You’re walking right into a concrete tomb."

Arthur didn't waste another breath on the guard. He grabbed a heavy industrial flashlight from the emergency charging station on the wall and turned toward the back exit of the control room—a secondary maintenance stairwell that spiraled downward into pitch darkness.

"Stay here, Sophie," Arthur commanded, his hand resting on the heavy metal door handle. "If Marcus tries to move, break his other jaw."

"I'm not staying behind, Mr. Morel," Sophie said stubbornly, stepping past him into the stairwell with a fierce determination burning in her eyes. "My sister’s bones might be buried at the bottom of that shaft, and I am not letting you face Victoria alone."

Arthur looked at the young maid—at the white medical bandage wrapped around her arm, at the fierce, unyielding light in her tear-stained eyes—and realized she possessed a backbone of steel that put his entire executive board to shame. Without another word, he nodded and stepped into the stairwell, pulling the heavy metal door shut behind them.

The descent into the bowels of Blackwood Manor was a plunge into ice and silence. The air grew damp and smelled of wet earth, rust, and old paper. Each step downward echoed off the rough-hewn stone walls, a stark contrast to the gleaming marble and polished mahogany of the mansion above.

After descending what felt like dozens of flights of stairs, their flashlights cut through the gloom to reveal a massive, heavy iron door set directly into the natural rock face. Across its surface, thick chains were secured by a heavy brass padlock, and stamped directly into the iron was a warning emblem from the municipal housing authority dating back to 1954: CONDEMNED.

Arthur shone his light on the padlock. It wasn't rusted shut. In fact, the metal gleamed faintly under the beam, freshly oiled and recently locked.

"She was just down here," Arthur whispered, running a gloved finger over the damp shackle. "Someone unlocked this door less than an hour ago."

Sophie stepped closer, her breath pluming in the freezing air. She reached out and touched the stone wall beside the iron door, her fingers tracing a deep, crude scratch in the mortar—a series of initials and a date carved by a desperate hand.

E.C. - MARCH 14.

Sophie choked back a sob. "That's her initials. Elena Carter. My sister."

Before Arthur could pull out his multitool to force the chain, a sharp metallic click echoed from the darkness behind them, followed by the heavy, echoing thud of the stairwell access door slamming shut and locking automatically from above.
