Chapter 12 - The Shattered Skylight

Shards of safety glass rained down over the wooden deck like glittering diamonds as the bullet buried itself deep into the cedar beams of the boathouse ceiling. Victoria shrieked in pain as the shock of the impact forced the heavy revolver out of her grip, sending the weapon clattering across the planks and sliding straight through a gap in the dock into the dark, churning waters of the lake below.
Arthur didn't hesitate. He closed the distance between them in two massive strides, grabbing Victoria by the shoulders and slamming her back against the heavy wooden door frame, pinning her there with his full body weight.
"It's over," Arthur said, his voice trembling with a mixture of adrenaline and profound grief. "The game is finished."
Victoria didn't struggle. Instead, her head lolled back against the timber, and a strange, hollow smile spread across her lips. She wasn't looking at Arthur; she was staring past him toward the private road leading down from the main gates of the estate.
"You think I'm the only one who wanted you ruined?" Victoria whispered, blood trickling from a small cut on her temple where the flying glass had grazed her skin. "Look at the main drive, Arthur. Look who just arrived."
Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the boathouse, a convoy of three sleek black town cars swept down the winding driveway, their high-beam headlights cutting through the gray dawn mist. The vehicles stopped directly in front of the grand entrance of the mansion, and the doors opened in unison.
Out stepped half a dozen men in dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases—the executive board of Morel Shipping, led by none other than the senior legal counsel, Howard Sterling, accompanied by Dr. Vance himself.
"They're early," Sophie whispered, clutching her bandaged arm as she looked out at the approaching convoy. "The meeting... they moved the time up."
Arthur released his grip on Victoria, stepping back as the reality of the situation set in. Victoria slid down the doorframe, panting heavily, her eyes gleaming with renewed triumph.
"They didn't move the time, my dear husband," Victoria said softly, wiping the blood from her temple with the back of her hand. "They came here specifically to sign the emergency receivership documents. And right now, Dr. Vance is carrying the medical certificate declaring you legally incompetent to manage your own estate."
Arthur looked back at his mother, who sat in her deck chair with an expression of grim, unbreakable resolve.
"We go up to the main terrace," Sarah Morel said, her voice carrying an absolute authority that commanded attention. "We meet them in the foyer under the grand chandelier. Let them look us in the eye while they try to steal our legacy."
Arthur nodded slowly. He reached down and gripped the handles of his mother’s wheelchair, turning her toward the boathouse exit. He caught Sophie’s eye, giving her a reassuring nod before they stepped out into the cold morning air, marching straight toward the glowing lights of the mansion where the final battle for Morel Manor was about to begin.

As they reached the heavy oak front doors of the foyer, the brass handle turned from the inside before Arthur could even knock, and Howard Sterling stepped out onto the marble threshold holding a thick stack of papers bound in red ribbon.
