Chapter 1 - The Broken Threshold

The grand chandelier of Blackwood Manor cast a cold, glittering light over the opulent foyer, illuminating a scene of bitter domestic cruelty. Victoria stood draped in a vibrant red strapless dress that hugged her sleek silhouette, her manicured finger aggressively aimed downward at the parquet floor. Her face twisted into a mask of aristocratic disdain as she looked upon the young maid huddled near her knees.

"Get that filthy chair out of here!" Victoria snapped, her voice cutting through the hollow acoustics of the entryway like shattered glass.

Sophie flinched, her shoulders shaking beneath her standard-issue black-and-white uniform. The tipped-over wheelchair lay sideways, its rubber tire still spinning slowly, while the discarded medical arm bandage fluttered slightly in the draft from the front doors.

A heavy pair of leather shoes clicked against the marble stairs. Mr. Morel strode into the light, wearing a tailored black suit and a matching black shirt that accentuated his imposing, austere frame. He cast a sharp glance down at the weeping girl.

"Leave it," Morel commanded, his deep baritone carrying absolute authority. "Leave it."

Sophie lifted her tear-streaked face, her chest rising and falling in ragged, uneven breaths as she stared up at him.

"Mr. Morel..." she whispered, her voice cracking with suppressed terror.

Victoria glided closer to Morel, her lips curving into a predatory, sly smile as she sought to shape the narrative.

"She caught it on the garage door," Victoria explained smoothly, her tone dripping with false innocence.

Morel stepped directly into Sophie's personal space, ignoring Victoria entirely. He knelt slightly, his eyes locking onto the gauze wrapped tightly around Sophie's forearm.

"Sophie... did you hurt your arm helping my mother?" Morel asked quietly.

Sophie swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the winding staircase that led to the upper level where the matriarch’s private suite remained permanently locked. She wanted to tell him the truth about the garage, about the screeching tires and the wheelchair that had been pushed deliberately while his mother was still inside it. But as she opened her mouth to speak, a chilling sound echoed from the dark landing above—a slow, distinct knock from a cane against the hardwood floor.
