Chapter 3 - The Silver Heirloom

The antique pocket watch glinted dully under the harsh glare of the grand chandelier, its glass face cracked down the middle like a spiderweb. Arthur Morel stared at the silver casing in stunned silence, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to snatch it back, yet paralyzed by the implications of its presence in the maid's possession.

"Where did you find this?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register that made Victoria take an involuntary step backward.

Sophie pressed the watch tightly against her apron, her breath coming in shallow gasps. "I didn't steal it, Mr. Morel. Your mother gave it to me. Not yesterday. Not in the hospital. She gave it to me twenty minutes ago, right before the wheelchair went over the edge."

Victoria let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that sounded entirely forced. "Listen to the lunatic! Arthur, the girl is clearly suffering from hallucinations brought on by exhaustion or worse. Throw her out on the street before she steals the silver flatware next!"

"Shut up, Victoria," Arthur commanded without raising his voice, yet the sheer venom in his tone silenced her instantly. He turned his complete, unblinking focus back to Sophie. "My mother has not spoken a single coherent word in six months. The doctors at the sanitarium signed the reports. She is completely unresponsive."

"The doctors lied," Sophie whispered, glancing nervously toward the looming shadows of the staircase. "They are all lying to you, Mr. Morel. The woman upstairs in the east wing... she isn't your real mother."

The words hung in the air, dense and suffocating, threatening to tear the foundation of the Morel estate apart. Victoria’s face drained of all color, her meticulously applied makeup suddenly looking like a mask over a corpse. She lunged forward with surprising speed, grabbing Sophie by the shoulder and shoving her backward against the mahogany console table.

"You ungrateful little parasite!" Victoria screamed, losing her polished composure entirely as panic broke through her defenses. "You are trying to destroy this family with your filthy lies!"

Arthur caught Victoria’s wrist mid-air, his grip like a vise. He didn't yell; his expression was terrifyingly calm, a mask of glacial fury.

"If you touch her again, Victoria, you will leave this house with nothing more than the clothes on your back," Arthur warned. He released her arm with a sharp shove that sent her stumbling into the marble pillar.

Arthur turned back to Sophie, his eyes searching her face for any sign of deception. Instead, he saw absolute, unwavering terror.

"Take me to her," Arthur ordered quietly.

Sophie shook her head rapidly. "We can't just walk up there. The security detail changed shifts at midnight. There are cameras everywhere, and the man who watches the monitors isn't on our side."

Arthur’s eyes narrowed as he realized the full depth of the trap closing around him. "Whose side is he on?"
