Chapter 13 - The Grand Confrontation

The opulent foyer of Blackwood Manor was bathed in the harsh, unflattering light of dawn as the executive board members filed silently into the space, their expensive leather shoes clicking against the pristine marble floors. Howard Sterling, the senior legal counsel with silver-streaked hair and an impeccably tailored navy suit, stood at the center of the room like a presiding judge.
Behind him stood Dr. Vance, holding a thick medical folder tucked securely under his arm, his expression a mask of clinical detachment.
"Arthur," Sterling said, his voice smooth and devoid of any genuine warmth. "We received an emergency notification from Mrs. Morel regarding your sudden disappearance and erratic behavior last night. The board has convened early to address the administrative stability of the shipping enterprise."
Arthur pushed his mother’s wheelchair forward, stopping directly beneath the glittering crystal chandelier where the tipped-over chair and bloody bandage had lain just hours before. The debris had already been cleared away by the morning cleaning staff, leaving the parquet floor polished to a mirror-like shine.
"The only emergency in this house is the systemic fraud being perpetrated by Dr. Vance and my estranged wife," Arthur stated, his voice ringing clearly off the high vaulted ceilings, carrying an absolute authority that made several junior board members shift uncomfortably in their suits.
Dr. Vance stepped forward, opening his medical folio with a practiced, theatrical flourish. "Mr. Morel is currently suffering from acute paranoid delusions brought on by severe corporate stress. I have here the official psychiatric evaluations, signed and notarized, documenting his inability to execute his duties as CEO."
"Those evaluations are forgeries," Sophie interrupted, stepping out from behind Arthur’s shadow. She held up a thick manila folder she had retrieved from the archive room. "I have the original prescription logs and the financial wire transfers proving that Dr. Vance received over two million dollars in offshore payments from Victoria’s personal trust account to falsify those medical records."
Sterling didn't even glance at the folder Sophie offered. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with cold disdain. "Quiet down, young lady. Disgruntled domestic staff accusations hold no legal weight against verified medical documentation and board majority consensus."
"Is that so, Howard?" a quiet, raspy voice echoed through the foyer.
Sarah Morel unlocked the brakes on her wheelchair herself, rolling forward an inch to fix the senior lawyer with a stare so piercing that Sterling actually took an involuntary half-step back.
