Chapter 6 - The Forged Legacy

The vintage wedding car’s taillights vanished into the heavy white fog rolling down the mountain, leaving behind the smell of burning rubber and exhaust in the crisp winter air. The guests stood paralyzed, whispering nervously among themselves as the distant wail of the police sirens grew louder by the second.

Elena stared down at the scattered papers lying in the slush at her feet. She knelt beside them, ignoring the freezing wetness soaking through her dress, and picked up the top document. Her hands trembled violently as she examined the signature line.

"This isn't my signature," Elena whispered, looking up at Thomas, who had hurried over to help her up. "It’s not even an attempt at my handwriting. It’s my mother’s signature."

Thomas knelt beside her, squinting at the official-looking seal stamped at the bottom of the page. "Your mother’s? But she passed away two years ago."

"I know," Elena breathed, a cold dread washing over her that was far more intense than the winter weather. "Julian was handling her estate management during her final months. He told me everything was legally squared away." She flipped the page over. "He didn't just steal Claire’s life. He used my mother’s death to fund this entire wedding, and he transferred my family’s entire estate into a shell company three weeks ago."

Margaret limped over, clutching her bandaged hand to her chest. Her face was pale, lined with the deep regret of a woman carrying a terrible secret for too long. "He was always calculating, Elena. Ever since his parents lost everything in the crash, Julian became obsessed with wealth. Claire wasn't his first victim of financial manipulation... she was just the first one who fought back."

"What do you mean, first?" Thomas asked sharply, turning to face the older woman. "Are there others?"

Before Margaret could answer, the sharp flash of red and blue lights illuminated the snowy clearing. Two county sheriff cruisers careened around the bend, tires crunching to a halt near the altar. Doors flew open, and two armed deputies stepped out into the biting cold, hands resting near their holstered weapons.

"Sheriff’s Department! What is going on here?" the lead deputy called out, scanning the tense crowd of wedding guests, the ruined altar, and the open metal box resting in the snow.

Thomas raised his hands slightly and stepped forward. "Officer, thank God you're here. We need units deployed down the mountain immediately. A man just fled the scene—he’s a suspect in a five-year-old homicide."

The deputy’s expression hardened instantly. He unclipped his radio from his shoulder. "All units, be on the lookout for a vintage black sedan heading south on Route 4. Suspect is a white male, tall, wearing a dark overcoat..."

Elena stood quietly amidst the chaos, her white fur wrap clutched tightly around her shoulders. She looked down at the rusted metal box labeled CLAIRE. Inside, beneath the photographs and the blood-stained diary, lay something she hadn't noticed before—a small, folded piece of heavy cardstock with a handwritten address in the nearby town of Blackwood.

As the deputy turned to question her, Elena quietly slid the card into the pocket of her wedding dress, keeping her discovery hidden from the police.
