Chapter 5 - The Hand in the Pocket

The tension in the clearing reached a breaking point. The winter wind whipped through the trees again, carrying the faint, distant wail of a siren echoing up the winding mountain road. Everyone heard it. The police were coming, and Julian knew his time was running out.

"Julian, take your hand out of your pocket right now," Thomas warned, taking a cautious step forward, his hands raised in a defensive gesture. "Don't do anything stupid. It’s over."

"You don't know what it took to build this life," Julian muttered, his voice dangerously low. His fingers remained buried deep inside the heavy fabric of his overcoat. "I clawed my way out of the dirt. I wasn't going to let some naive girl take it all away with a stroke of a pen."

Elena stood her ground, though her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept the metal box clutched in her left hand, while her right hand instinctively brushed against the white fur wrap around her shoulders. She realized with chilling clarity that she had nearly become Claire. She had been chosen for her resemblance, groomed to step into the exact same trap.

"So I was just a replacement?" Elena asked, her voice cracking slightly despite her best efforts to stay strong. "You dressed me in her clothes, you brought me to this exact spot, and you were planning to do the same thing to me once the accounts were signed?"

"You were supposed to be different," Julian replied bitterly, his eyes fixed on her with a disturbing mixture of affection and hatred. "You were supposed to be compliant. But you just had to start digging, didn't you?"

Margaret began to sob quietly, covering her face with her bloodied hands. "I tried to stop him five years ago," she cried out to the gathered guests. "He told me she ran away to Canada. He threatened me if I ever told the truth. I let my own cowardice keep a killer free."

"Shut up, Margaret!" Julian roared, finally pulling his hand out of his overcoat.

He wasn't holding a weapon. Instead, he pulled out a thick, heavy bundle of legal documents wrapped in a rubber band—the property and asset transfer papers bearing Elena’s signature at the bottom.

"You already signed them yesterday, Elena," Julian smiled, a terrifying, unhinged grin spreading across his face. "The cabins, the accounts, the trust fund. Legally, I own everything you have. Even if the police take me away, you’re walking away with absolutely nothing."

Before anyone could react, Julian turned sharply and sprinted toward the idling wedding car, flinging the door open and diving into the driver's seat. The tires spun furiously on the ice, spraying slush and mud into the air as the vehicle fishtailed onto the narrow mountain road.

"Stop him!" Thomas yelled, but it was too late.

Elena watched the car disappear around the icy bend. She looked down at the legal papers Julian had thrown onto the snowy ground before escaping. As the wind caught the top page, her eyes widened in horror. The signature wasn't hers at all; it was a clever, terrifying forgery of her mother’s handwriting.
