Chapter 12 - The Confession of Margaret

The cabin went dead silent, save for the crackling of the fire in the hearth. The deputies exchanged heavy glances, slowly lowering their firearms as the weight of Margaret’s confession settled over the room like a physical blanket.

Julian scrambled backward until his back hit the peeling wall, his face completely devoid of color. "She’s lying," he whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. "She’s senile. She doesn't know what she's saying."

"I am completely in my right mind, Julian," Margaret said, her voice suddenly steady and cold as ice. She looked up at Detective Miller, tears finally spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "Arrest me if you want, officer. I’ve lived with this nightmare for five years, and I’m done hiding his sins."

Elena stood frozen near the doorway, the metal box still clutched in her hand like a shield. She looked at Margaret, then at the man she had almost married. "You helped him?" Elena asked, her voice barely a whisper. "You knew he killed her, and you helped him cover it up?"

"He told me she fell," Margaret sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "He called me in the middle of the night, panicking. When I got here, Claire was lying on this exact floor. He said it was an accident during an argument over money. He begged me to help him move her body so he wouldn't go to prison. I loved him... he was my sister’s only boy. I thought I was protecting family."

"And then he did the same thing to my mother's accounts," Elena said, stepping forward, her eyes blazing with righteous fury. "He didn't just cover up a murder, Margaret. He used the exact same playbook on my family. He was going to kill me too, once the transfer went through."

Julian let out a hysterical, broken laugh, sliding down the wall until he sat flat on the floor. "You think you're so smart, Elena. You think you've figured it all out. But you don't know the half of it. Claire wasn't an angel. She tried to ruin me first."

"Shut up, Julian!" Margaret screamed, lunging forward again, but the deputy easily held her back.

Detective Miller stepped directly in front of Julian, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. He yanked Julian up by his arm, forcing him onto his knees and snapping the cuffs securely around his wrists.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for the kidnapping, financial fraud, and murder of Claire Miller," Detective Miller recited coldly, reading him his rights as he hauled him to his feet. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As Julian was dragged toward the front door, he locked eyes with Elena one last time. A chilling, vacant smile crossed his lips.

"You can arrest me," Julian whispered as he was pushed past her. "But you'll never find where I hid the rest of your mother's estate. The key died with Claire."
