Chapter 11 - The Figure in the Shadows

The sudden violence inside the cabin shattered the tense silence of the dead neighborhood. Detective Miller didn't wait another second. He kicked the front door open with a resounding crack, his service weapon raised and sweeping the room.

"Police! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!" the detective roared, stepping over the threshold into the smoky living room.

Elena followed closely behind the deputies, her boots slipping on the slick, fuel-soaked floorboards. The smell of gasoline was overwhelmingly sharp, stinging her eyes and throat.

In the center of the living room, a fierce struggle was unfolding. Julian was pinned beneath a heavy, struggling figure dressed in a thick, dark parka and a worn woolen cap. The mysterious intruder had Julian’s arm twisted behind his back, pressing him hard against the wooden floorboards while Julian thrashed and screamed in fury.

"Get off me! Who the hell are you?!" Julian yelled, his face pressed against the dirty floor as he kicked wildly.

"Let him go! Step away from the suspect!" the second deputy commanded, rushing forward and grabbing the intruder by the shoulders, pulling him back and forcing him onto his knees.

The woolen cap slipped off as the figure was pulled away, revealing a shock of short white hair and a deeply weathered, tear-streaked face.

Elena gasped, stopping dead in her tracks. It wasn't an assassin or a stranger from the woods.

It was Margaret.

Julian’s aunt knelt on the floor, breathing heavily, her hands bruised and blackened with soot. She glared down at Julian with a look of pure, unadulterated hatred that completely transformed her usually gentle demeanor.

"Margaret?" Julian sputtered, coughing from the smoke as he pushed himself up onto his hands and knees. He stared at his aunt in utter disbelief. "You... you crazy old bat! What are you doing here?!"

"I followed you," Margaret panted, her voice trembling with adrenaline and rage. She ignored the deputies holding her arms and stared straight into Julian’s terrified eyes. "You thought I didn't know about this house? You thought I forgot what you did to Claire here, long before you buried her at the altar?"

Detective Miller lowered his weapon slightly, keeping his eyes darting between Julian and Margaret. "Hold on. Are you saying Claire was brought here first?"

"She wasn't just brought here," Margaret said, her voice rising in a sharp, emotional crack. She pointed a trembling finger directly at the stone fireplace. "She was murdered right here in this room, five years ago. And I helped him clean it up."
