Chapter 13 - The Hidden Vault

The heavy oak door of the Blackwood cabin slammed shut behind the deputies as they led Julian out into the falling snow, loading him into the back of the cruiser. Margaret sat on the edge of a dusty wooden chair by the hearth, weeping softly into her hands, completely broken by the afternoon's revelations.
Elena remained standing in the center of the fuel-soaked room, her mind replaying Julian’s final words: The key died with Claire.
She looked around the dilapidated living room. The fire in the stone hearth crackled rhythmically, casting a warm, flickering glow across the soot-stained bricks. She remembered the photographs in the metal box—Claire standing by this very fireplace, holding a small brass key around her neck on a leather cord.
Elena walked slowly toward the hearth, ignoring the lingering smell of gasoline. She knelt down beside the low stone platform where the fire burned.
"What are you looking for, child?" Margaret asked quietly, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her parka and looking up at Elena with weary eyes.
"The key," Elena replied, her eyes scanning every inch of the rough stonework. "Julian said it died with her. But if he was so desperate to burn this house down before we arrived, it means there’s something here he didn't want the police to find."
Margaret frowned, leaning forward. "When we cleaned up... Julian took everything from her pockets. He searched her for hours before we moved her body to the altar site."
"He searched her body," Elena repeated, her eyes locking onto a small, slightly discolored iron brick embedded in the corner of the hearth. "He searched her pockets. But did he check the masonry?"
Elena reached out with a trembling hand, her gloved fingers pressing against the iron brick. It didn't budge at first. She gripped the edge tighter, using all her strength to twist the heavy metal piece. With a sharp, metallic click, the brick rotated inward, releasing a hidden spring mechanism inside the chimney wall.
A small, secret compartment slid open with a soft hiss of trapped air.
Inside the dark recess sat a heavy velvet pouch and a thick stack of original bank deeds bearing Elena’s mother's genuine signature, alongside Claire’s missing gold locket.

Elena reached inside, pulling out the velvet pouch and untying the golden cord. Resting in the palm of her hand was a small, ornate brass key—and tucked beneath it was a final, unopened letter addressed to whoever would finally find the truth.
