Chapter 1 - The Chilling Discovery

The bitter wind whipped across the snow-draped clearing of Pine Ridge, stinging Julian’s face as he stared down at the dark, matted fur of the frantic husky. The massive dog was tearing through the frozen crust near the altar with terrifying speed.
Julian’s breath hitched in his chest. His knuckles whitened inside the pockets of his dark overcoat.
"Get that dog away!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with an unnatural urgency that cut through the frozen air.
Elena didn't listen. She ignored his command completely.
The heavy white fur wrap slipped from her shoulders as she dropped to her knees in the freezing snow. Her white wedding dress absorbed the damp chill, but she didn’t care. With bare, shivering hands, she scraped away the dark dirt and ice. Her fingers brushed against something metallic. She pulled it free.
It was a small, tarnished wedding ring.
Elena brought the ring closer to her face, squinting against the blinding winter glare. Tears welled in her eyes, freezing at the corners of her lashes. She traced the tiny, elegant script engraved along the inner band.
"Who is Claire?" Elena asked softly, her voice barely a whisper, yet it felt like a gunshot in the silent forest.
Julian took a sharp step backward, his face draining of all color. "Drop it, Elena. It’s nothing. Just old junk."
"It’s not just junk!" Elena retorted, standing up abruptly, her eyes flashing with sudden fury. "It has an engraving! People don’t bury wedding rings by accident, Julian! Why are you shaking?"
"I am not shaking!" Julian snapped back, his voice rising in panic as he lunged forward to grab her wrist. "Give me that ring right now! We are getting married in twenty minutes, stop ruining this!"
"Don't you dare touch me!" Elena pulled her arm back, her voice trembling with rising betrayal. "Tell me the truth right now. Who is Claire? Why is her ring buried beneath our wedding altar?"
Before Julian could scramble for a lie, an older woman stepped out from the tightly clustered rows of wedding guests. Margaret, Julian’s aunt, clutched a shattered champagne glass in her trembling hand. The stem was dug deep into her palm, a single drop of dark blood pooling onto the snow.
"Where did you find that?" Margaret gasped, her eyes wide with unmasked panic as she stumbled forward. She grabbed Elena’s arm with a desperate, crushing grip. "Then there's something else buried there."
Julian’s eyes locked onto his aunt, and a look of sheer terror crossed his face.
"Shut up, Margaret!" Julian screamed, lunging between them. "Just shut your mouth!"
Beneath the heavy wooden platform of the altar, the husky let out a low, victorious growl, using its powerful jaws to drag a heavy, old rusty metal box straight out from the frozen earth. Stenciled in faded white paint across the lid were the bold letters: CLAIRE.
