Chapter 6 - The Sub-Basement Archive

The concrete steps spiraling downward seemed to stretch into infinity, the air growing progressively colder and damper with every floor they descended. Julian kept one arm firmly around Lily, carrying her whenever her tired legs threatened to give out on the steep steps. Her breathing was heavy and shallow against his chest, the sound a constant reminder of the stakes they were carrying into the dark. Arthur led the way, his heavy tactical boots crunching on occasional fragments of loose plaster that had fallen from the ceiling.
They finally reached the bottom landing, facing a heavy titanium-reinforced security door bearing a faded biohazard symbol. A keypad glowed with a faint blue light beside the handle, casting an eerie hue over Arthur’s tense face as he stepped up to it.
"This is it," Arthur muttered, his fingers hovering over the plastic buttons. "The central archive and lab."
Julian set Lily down gently on a metal crate near the wall, keeping his dark coat wrapped tight around himself against the chill. "Can you open it? Or are we going to need another heavy wrench?"
"The power’s still routed from the emergency generator on this level," Arthur replied, punching in a rapid sequence of numbers. "Sarah programmed this keypad herself. If I miss the sequence twice, the system locks permanently and floods the compartment with halon gas."
The keypad beeped sharply—a high-pitched warning tone that made Julian flinch. The blue light flickered and turned an angry, pulsing red.
"Damn it!" Arthur cursed under his breath, his forehead beading with fresh sweat as he stared at the error message flashing across the small screen.
"You said you knew her work, Arthur," Julian stepped forward, his voice rising in dangerous frustration. "You said you were her partner in this facility. Why is it locking you out?"
"Because she changed the administrative protocols three days before the outbreak," Arthur hissed back, his hands hovering over the keys again. "She knew someone was going to try to access the primary terminal to cover up the leak. She built a secondary fail-safe."
From the stairwell above them, a distinct sound drifted down—the slow, heavy dragging of bare feet on concrete, accompanied by that same rhythmic, clicking cadence. Click. Click. Click.
Lily whimpered, clutching Julian’s hand so tightly his fingers tingled. "Daddy, it’s coming down the stairs. I can hear it."
"Arthur, hurry up!" Julian yelled, grabbing the front of the tactical officer’s vest and shoving him aside. "Type it in or I swear I’ll break this door down myself!"
"Wait! Don't touch the manual override!" Arthur shouted, but it was too late. Julian’s hand slammed down onto the heavy steel emergency release lever beside the keypad.

A loud mechanical hiss filled the corridor as the titanium bolts retracted, but instead of the door sliding open, a thick cloud of white smoke hissed out from the ceiling vents directly above their heads, smelling sharply of sweet almonds.
