Chapter 2 - Threshold of Shadows

The air pouring out from the unsealed room tasted of metallic ozone and old dust, thick enough to choke on. Julian stepped across the threshold, his dark coat brushing the splintered doorframe where the heavy padlock had just been beaten off. The overhead fluorescent lights of the hallway cast a long, narrow beam into the absolute darkness of the interior, illuminating floating specks of gray ash. Lily clung tightly to his right hand, her small fingers digging into his palm so hard it hurt. She refused to look inside, keeping her tear-streaked face pressed firmly against his thigh.
"Stay right behind me, Lily," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly as he pulled a small flashlight from his coat pocket and clicked it on.
The beam cut through the gloom, revealing a room that looked less like a living space and more like a high-security containment cell. The walls were covered floor-to-ceiling in heavy acoustic foam, partially torn away in jagged strips as if someone had clawed at them in a blind frenzy. In the center of the room sat a single steel-framed cot, its mattress ripped open, stuffing spilling out onto the floor like entrails. Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.
"Sarah?" Julian called out, his voice echoing hollowly in the enclosed space. There was no answer, only the steady, dripping sound of water from a broken pipe somewhere in the wall.
He swept the flashlight beam toward the far corner, where a massive mahogany wardrobe stood with its doors blown outward from the inside. Splintered wood pointed toward them like jagged teeth. Julian took two cautious steps forward, his boots crunching on broken picture frames and shattered glass. He spotted a familiar silver charm bracelet lying halfway beneath the ruined cot. It was Sarah’s, the one he had given her on their fifth wedding anniversary. He knelt down slowly, keeping one hand free, and picked it up. The metal was ice-cold.
"Daddy, look at the wall," Lily whimpered softly, pointing a trembling finger toward the far corner near the ceiling.
Julian raised the flashlight. Scratched deep into the thick white paint, layer upon layer, were numbers. Hundreds of them. Written in a frantic, repeating sequence that seemed to defy any logical pattern. 42-11-8. 42-11-8. It covered the entire corner like a bizarre mathematical tapestry woven by a disturbed mind. Julian stared at the digits, a cold knot forming in his stomach. Sarah was a botanist, a brilliant researcher who dealt in flora, not obscure numerical codes.
Suddenly, a faint scraping sound came from inside the ventilation shaft above the wardrobe.
Julian spun around, aiming the flashlight beam straight up at the metal grate. The screws holding the vent in place had been unscrewed from the inside and lay neatly arranged on the floor below. The dark opening was just large enough for a person to crawl through.
"Who’s there?" Julian demanded, stepping in front of Lily to shield her with his body.
A low, guttural exhalation drifted down from the dark shaft, followed by the sound of bare skin sliding against sheet metal.
May you like
Julian froze as a pale, bruised hand slipped out of the vent, its long fingers twitching rhythmically against the edge of the dark opening before pointing directly down at him.
