Chapter 13 - The Opening Door

The heavy titanium door swung inward with a slow, grinding groan, revealing the pitch-black corridor beyond. The high-pitched 42-hertz tone continued to pulse through the archive speakers, vibrating the floor beneath their boots and making the air feel thick and heavy. Julian stood paralyzed behind the locked security gate, his hands gripping the cold steel bars, his eyes locked on the dark threshold where the footsteps were growing louder by the second.

"Get back from the gate, Julian," Arthur warned, his stance rigid, both hands locked firmly around his sidearm as he aimed directly at the open doorway.

From the darkness of the corridor, a tall, slender figure emerged into the green-tinted light of the archive. It was Sarah. Her dark hair was matted with dust, her clothes torn and stained, and her skin pale and translucent under the fluorescent glow. But unlike the feral creature that had clung to the ceiling upstairs, Sarah walked with a calm, deliberate grace. Her eyes, too, shone with that same unsettling, luminescent amber light that now defined her daughter.

Lily turned away from the laptop on the other side of the security gate and looked toward the doorway, a small, knowing smile touching the corners of her lips.

"Mommy," Lily said softly, her voice carrying an eerie resonance that echoed through the room. "The circuit is complete."

Sarah stopped in the center of the archive, her gaze passing right over Arthur as if he were invisible, fixing entirely on Julian standing behind the iron bars. She raised her hand slowly, pressing her palm against the steel mesh of the security gate, directly opposite where Julian’s hands were gripping the metal.

"Julian," Sarah said, her voice sounding like a blend of her own familiar warmth and a strange, multi-layered chorus. "You spent so long trying to save me from the dark. But the dark is the only place we were ever safe from what’s coming."

"Sarah, what have they done to you?" Julian choked out, tears finally breaking free and spilling down his cheeks, cutting clean paths through the dust on his face. "Look at what they turned our family into."

"They didn't turn us, Julian. They evolved us," Sarah replied gently, tilting her head at that exact, impossible angle. 42-11-8. "The world outside these walls is burning. You saw the maps. The old human era is over."

Arthur tightened his grip on his pistol, his finger pressing against the trigger guard. "I can't let you complete the broadcast, Sarah. If that signal hits the satellite relays, there’s no turning back for anyone."

Sarah didn't even look at Arthur. She simply whispered a single word, and the entire archive’s electrical system shorted out with a deafening explosion of sparks from the ceiling.
