Chapter 5 - The Descent

The figure clinging to the ceiling tilted its head at an impossible ninety-degree angle, long blonde hair dangling into the air like dry grass. In the harsh beam of Arthur’s tactical flashlight, the skin of her face appeared translucent, stretched too tight over high cheekbones, her eyes completely devoid of normal focus. It was Sarah—or at least, the terrifying shell of what Sarah used to be. Lily let out a high-pitched, terrified scream, burying her face so hard into Julian’s waist that she nearly knocked him off balance.

"Don't look, Lily! Keep your eyes closed!" Julian shouted over the rising roar of his own panic, scooping his daughter up into his arms in one fluid motion, burying her small head against his shoulder.

Arthur raised his weapon, his finger hovering over the trigger. "Move! Get through the fire door now!"

"Don't shoot her!" Julian roared, taking a protective step backward, his dark coat flaring around his legs as he shielded the creature on the ceiling from Arthur’s line of sight.

"She isn't your wife anymore, Julian!" Arthur barked back, his voice tight with desperation as he kept his sights locked on the ceiling. "She’s a vector! If she drops down on us, we’re all finished!"

From above, a wet, clicking sound emanated from Sarah’s throat—a rhythmic, mechanical cadence that matched the numbers scratched on the bedroom wall: 42-11-8. Without warning, the figure detached from the ceiling, dropping downward with terrifying speed. Arthur fired twice—not to kill, but to force her back—the deafening cracks of the firearm echoing thunderously through the narrow corridor.

The bullets struck the wall inches from Sarah, showering the floor with chunks of white plaster. The sudden concussive force startled the creature, causing her to vault sideways into the open ventilation shaft with inhuman agility, disappearing into the dark metal labyrinth just as the fire door’s pneumatic arm began to pull it shut.

"Go! Move!" Arthur grabbed Julian by the shoulder, shoving him through the heavy fire door into the stairwell just as the metal slammed shut behind them with a definitive, echoing thud.

The stairwell was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint green phosphorescence of the emergency floor numbers painted on the concrete steps. The air down here was thick with the smell of damp earth and old motor oil. Julian set Lily down gently, keeping one arm wrapped firmly around her waist. She was sobbing uncontrollably now, her tiny frame racked with violent tremors.

"We’re safe for a second, sweetie. Daddy’s here," Julian whispered fiercely, trying to steady his own breathing. He turned to Arthur, who was leaning against the concrete wall, reloading his sidearm with trembling hands. "Where does this stairwell lead? You said the parking garage was breached."

"It leads to the lower sub-basement," Arthur said grimly, snapping the magazine into place with a sharp click. "To the primary research lab where Sarah kept her original notes. If there’s an antidote, or a way to shut down the transmission loop, it’s down there in her secure terminal."

Julian stared down the seemingly endless spiral of concrete steps disappearing into the Stygian gloom below. "And if the lab is overrun?"

Arthur looked him dead in the eye, his expression completely devoid of hope. "Then we burn this entire facility to the ground before the sun comes up."
