Chapter 4 - Darkness in the Stairwell

Absolute darkness swallowed the bright hallway in a fraction of a second, leaving only the amber glow of the emergency exit sign at the far end of the corridor casting long, distorted shadows. Julian pulled Lily tight against his side, his left arm wrapping securely around her small shoulders while his right hand instinctively reached for a weapon he didn't possess. His dark coat rustled sharply against the wallpaper as he spun around, trying to pierce the gloom.

"Arthur? Where are you?" Julian called out, his voice sharp and demanding, cutting through the heavy silence of the dead building.

"Quiet, you fool!" Arthur’s voice hissed from somewhere near the stairwell entrance. The sound of tactical boots scraping against concrete indicated he was moving fast, weapon drawn. "They aren't just in the vents. They've breached the lower parking level. The whole quarantine protocol has been overridden from the inside."

Lily buried her face in Julian’s coat again, whimpering softly. "Daddy, it’s cold. I want to go home."

"We are going home, baby. Just stay close to me," Julian murmured, his eyes finally adjusting enough to make out the silhouette of Arthur standing by the heavy fire door, frantically punching a digital keypad with one hand while holding a heavy tactical flashlight with the other. The small screen on the wall flickered red, flashing an error code.

Julian marched toward him, stepping over a discarded wrench that the SWAT officer had left behind. "What do you mean overridden? Who has access to this level besides you?"

Arthur paused, turning his head back just enough for the emergency red light to catch the sweat glistening on his forehead. "Nobody. That’s what makes this a nightmare. Sarah wasn't the only one infected at the botany lab last week. She brought something back, Julian. A specimen. And it’s smarter than we gave it credit for."

"Stop talking in riddles!" Julian shouted, grabbing Arthur by the lapel of his tactical vest and slamming him against the reinforced wall with a dull thud. "You’ve been lying to me since day one! You told me she had a nervous breakdown! You told me she wanted to be left alone!"

Arthur didn't fight back. He just stared at Julian with tired, bloodshot eyes, his chest rising and falling heavily. "If I told you the truth—that your wife had been exposed to an engineered pathogen that turns human neural pathways into a biological transmitter—you would have tried to break her out sooner. And you would have infected Lily. And me. And half the city."

Julian’s grip loosened slowly, his fingers trembling against the heavy fabric of the vest. "She’s my wife, Arthur. You don't just lock her away like an animal."

"I did what I had to do to save the people outside these walls," Arthur whispered harshly, breaking free from Julian’s grip and punching the keypad one last time. With a heavy click, the fire door popped open an inch, revealing the dark, cavernous stairwell descending into the basement. "Now, we move down, or we die up here in the dark."

Before Julian could take a step toward the door, a low, metallic scraping sound echoed from the ceiling directly above them.

Arthur raised his tactical flashlight and flicked it on, sweeping the beam upward. Clinging to the smooth white ceiling panels like a spider, a human figure in a shredded yellow dress hung upside down, its pale face twisted into an unnatural, wide grin.
