Chapter 12 - The Iron Gate

The heavy steel security gate vibrated violently from the impact, settling into the concrete floor with a final, echoing clang. Julian slammed his hands against the thick metal bars, his fingers curling frantically around the cold steel as he stared through the gap at his daughter. Lily stood on the other side of the barrier, bathed in the harsh green light of the cascading computer monitors, her amber eyes fixed entirely on Sarah’s open laptop.

"Lily! Open this gate!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with desperation as he shook the heavy bars with all his might. The metal didn't even budge.

"It’s tied into the primary lockdown protocol, Julian. You can't break through it manually," Arthur said, stepping up beside him, his face illuminated by the sickly green glow of the screens. Arthur wasn't looking at the gate; he was staring at a secondary monitoring console built into the wall near their side of the barrier.

Julian turned, grabbing Arthur by the collar of his tactical vest and slamming him back against the server racks with a metallic thud. "You set this up! You knew she would lock us out! Open it right now or I swear I’ll break your neck!"

Arthur didn't fight back. He simply pointed a trembling finger at the monitor beside them. The screen displayed a global map with hundreds of blinking red dots spreading outward from their suburban location across the entire Eastern Seaboard.

"Look at the map, Julian," Arthur said, his voice flat and devoid of defiance now, carrying only the weight of absolute defeat. "The broadcast has already started. Lily didn't activate the system—she was the final key required to decrypt the outer firewall."

Julian slowly released his grip on Arthur’s vest, his arms dropping to his sides as he stared at the map. The red dots were multiplying exponentially, spreading like a biological infection across major cities within seconds.

On the other side of the security gate, Lily reached out her small hand and pressed her palm flat against the touchpad of Sarah’s laptop.

A sharp, high-pitched audio tone—a pure tone exactly at 42 hertz—emitted from the computer speakers, filling the archive with a sound so piercing it made Julian’s teeth ache and his vision blur at the edges. Lily closed her eyes, her lips moving silently as she recited the repeating sequence aloud for the first time.

"Forty-two... eleven... eight," Lily whispered, her voice echoing through the facility's intercom system across every floor simultaneously.

Suddenly, the heavy titanium-reinforced door at the far end of the archive began to unlock itself, the massive bolts retracting one by one with loud, heavy thuds.

Arthur drew his sidearm, stepping in front of Julian and raising the barrel toward the newly opening doorway as heavy, dragging footsteps echoed from the corridor outside.
