Chapter 9 - The Locking Grid

As soon as the words left Mia’s mouth, a series of heavy, metallic thuds echoed throughout the house.

Clack. Clack. Clack.

Every smart lock on every door and window slammed shut in unison, engaging their emergency deadbolts with a finality that sent a shudder through the floorboards.

"Mark!" Elena screamed, rushing down the hallway to the top of the stairs and trying the handle of the master bedroom door. It wouldn't budge. "The doors are sealing! We're trapped inside!"

Mark sprinted out of the guest room, grabbing Mia by the shoulders. She felt ice-cold to the touch, her skin like marble. "Mia, look at me. Focus on me. Where were you?"

Mia blinked, the glazed look in her eyes fading as she gasped for air, collapsing against her father's chest. "Daddy? What... why is it so cold?" She clutched her stuffed rabbit, burying her face in Mark's dark polo shirt. "I was in the dark room, Daddy. The girls showed me where they sleep. They said you had to answer the call."

"What call?" Mark demanded, holding her tightly as Elena ran back down the hall to join them.

"The phone in the study," Mia whimpered, pointing a trembling finger downstairs. "It's ringing. It's been ringing for a long time."

Mark looked down the dark staircase. From the study at the end of the lower hallway, a faint, analog ringtone began to chime—a sharp, mechanical trill that hadn't been connected to an active landline since they bought the house.

Elena grabbed Mark's arm, her nails digging into his flesh. "Don't go down there, Mark. It's a trap. Look at the countdown on the computer."

Mark glanced back up toward the guest room. The digital timer on the monitor now read 00:08:45, ticking down twice as fast as before. The temperature in the hallway was plummeting rapidly, their breath pluming in the air like thick white smoke.

"If we don't answer it, we won't find out how to open the smart locks," Mark said, his voice grim. He handed Mia to Elena. "Hold her tight. Stay right here against the wall."

"Mark, please," Elena wept, pulling Mia into her arms.

Mark turned and descended the stairs into the freezing darkness of the ground floor. The analog phone in the study kept ringing, steady and relentless, cutting through the silence of the sealed house. He reached the study door, pushed it open, and stepped inside.

The room was covered in a thick layer of frost. On the wooden desk, the old rotary telephone was vibrating violently against the wood, its bell clanging loudly.

Mark walked slowly across the room, his breath fogging in the air. He reached out, lifted the heavy black receiver to his ear, and spoke into the mouthpiece.

"Hello?"

May you like

Silence crackled over the line, followed by the sound of heavy breathing—and then, a whisper that made Mark's blood turn to ice.
