Chapter 3 - The Open Doorway

The basement door hung slightly off its heavy iron hinges, the deadbolt mechanism gleaming with fresh, metallic scratches where something had forced it from the inside.

"Mark, please, let's just call the police," Elena begged, her voice trembling as she crept behind him, her fingers clutching the fabric of his dark polo shirt. "We shouldn't go down there."

"If someone broke in, the police will take twenty minutes to get out here," Mark said, trying to keep his voice steady for his wife and daughter. But his heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He aimed the heavy flashlight down the steep, concrete steps leading into the subterranean dark. "Mia, stay at the table with your mother. Do not move."

Mia shook her head fiercely, clutching her stuffed rabbit so hard her knuckles turned white. "You have to look at the third step, Daddy. That's where they left the mark."

Mark hesitated, shining the beam downward. The pale concrete stairs were dusty and undisturbed, save for a single, smudged handprint pressed into the grime near the bottom. It was small—too small to belong to an adult intruder. A cold dread settled deep in Mark’s stomach. He stepped onto the top stair, the wood groaning loudly in the quiet house.

"Mark, stop," Elena whispered, tugging harder on his shirt. "Listen."

From the depths of the basement came a faint, rhythmic scratching sound, followed by the unmistakable sound of a child giggling. It wasn’t Mia’s laugh; it was hollow, echoing with a strange metallic resonance that set Mark’s teeth on edge. He swallowed hard, tightening his grip on the flashlight. He descended two steps, the damp, earthen smell of the crawl space rising to meet him.

He reached the landing and peered around the concrete corner, sweeping the beam across the storage shelves and old holiday boxes. Nothing. Just shadows stretching long and distorted against the stone walls.

Mark let out a shaky breath, stepping fully onto the lower level. "Hello? Is anyone down here?" His voice sounded thin and defeated in the cavernous space.

He lowered the flashlight slightly, and the beam caught a small, white piece of fabric snagged on a protruding nail near the crawl space access panel.
