Chapter 8 - The Cipher

Mark stumbled backward against the doorframe, his heart hammering against his ribs as the girl in the tattered dress stood up from the chair with unnatural fluidity.

"Who are you?" Mark demanded, raising the flashlight like a weapon, though his hands shook uncontrollably. "Where is my daughter?"

The girl didn't answer. She took a slow, dragging step forward, her bare feet making a wet sound against the hardwood floor. Before Mark could lunge forward to grab her, she dissolved into a flurry of cold gray mist, vanishing into the frost-covered window as if she had never been there at all.

Mark rushed to the window, throwing it open to let the freezing night air rush in, but there was only the empty drop to the lawn below. No tracks in the frost, no sign of escape.

He turned back to the glowing computer monitor on the desk. The lines of flashing code had stopped, replaced by a single, blinking text prompt and a digital countdown timer: 00:15:00.

Beneath the timer was a directory path pointing to a hidden partition on their home server, labeled with a string of numbers that matched the coordinates of the old property registry from thirty years ago.

Mark pulled up a chair and sat down, his fingers trembling as he clicked on the file. A scanned document popped up on the screen—a yellowed newspaper clipping from 1994 detailing the tragic disappearance of two young sisters who had lived in this very house before it was gutted and remodeled. Their bodies had never been found.

"Mark?"

The door to the guest bedroom creaked open slowly. Elena stood in the threshold, her face etched with terror. "I heard shouting. What happened? Where's Mia?"

"She wasn't in the dining room, and she wasn't here," Mark said, his voice hollow as he pointed to the screen. "Elena, look at this. The house... it was built over an old estate. These girls... they lived here before us."

Elena stepped into the room, her eyes scanning the monitor. "That doesn't explain where our daughter is, Mark. Where is Mia?!"

"She's in the sub-basement," a voice whispered from the darkness of the hallway behind Elena.

Mark and Elena both spun around.

Standing in the doorway of the dark hallway, holding her stuffed rabbit—its head now firmly stitched back on with coarse black thread—was Mia. Her eyes were glazed over, and a faint, icy mist curled from her lips as she spoke in a voice that wasn't entirely her own.

"The timer is running out," Mia said, lifting her arm to point directly at the computer screen. "And the doors are locking themselves."
